Stinky Front Load Washer? 🤑
If your front load washer smells like a wet dog laying in a pile of stinky socks with a hint of Sewer gas, you are NOT ALONE.
A good indication of a problem "aside from the smell", is a black sludge in the bottom area of the rubber boot. You can attempt to clean that sludge with a typical small mildly abrasive sponge with a safe recommended cleaning solution. The rubber ring is very difficult to clean properly without removing it and would be considered a bare minimum maintenance task for heavily soiled machines. Removal of the rubber boot is not as easy job and should not be considered a DIY project unless you are a very mechanically inclined individual.
If your machine has a "Clean Cycle", run it initially with two cleaning tablets and continue using clean cycle with a single tablet after completing your laundry or daily for a week. An indication that the "Gunk" is gone is when there are no signs of black residue gathering in on the rubber boot or stainless steel basket.
If your machine does not have a clean cycle, use hot water on a long cycle like "Heavy Duty" with spin is set to slow if possible. Once the tablets dissolve, pause the machine for about 30 min and then resume again.
If your machine is older and has never been cleaned, aside from the visible black "Funky Gunk" in the rubber ring, it may have a very think layer of "GUNK" in the drum around the stainless steel basket that you cannot see. Each time you clean your machine, it will slowly work away at cleaning out the residue, however this can take considerably longer than the cleaning tablets suggest. I would recommend using a washer safe cleaning tablet such as "Affresh" in between regular washing for at least two weeks or until the smell and signs of residue in the rubber ring are gone.
After your rubber ring has been thoroughly cleaned, you wipe between your ring gold with a paper towel after each load. When the paper towel is no longer showing signs of residue, your machine is likely clean now and just needs to be maintained.
The following illustrations are from my own 9 year old LG washer. Initial efforts of multiple attempts to clean with cleaning tablets were unsuccessful at removing the "GUNK" so I ended up removing and cleaning the rubber ring. You will notice that there are no signs of Funky Gunk remaining and all that is required now is some regular cleaning maintenance.
