Lil’wat Lil'wat FireSmart and Lil’wat Lil'wat Forestry Ventures will be going door to door on Friday to answer any questions or concerns.

Líl̓wat Forestry Ventures (LFV), in collaboration with the Líl̓wat Nation and with support from BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) will be conducting a cultural burn covering up to 34.3 hectares in the Pemberton Zone of the Coastal Fire Centre, directly adjacent to the Xet̓ólacw community of Mount Currie and five kilometres northeast of Pemberton.

Please note smoke may be visible from Xet̓ólacw, Owl Ridge, Pemberton and surrounding areas, and to motorists travelling along Highway 99 (Duffey Lake Road).

The exact timing of this burn will depend on suitable weather and site conditions, but is anticipated to occur in stages from April to November 2026. Burning will proceed if conditions allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, although smoke may also linger in the following days. Depending on conditions, burn operations may be divided into individual sub-units and conducted on separate days.

To help maintain forest health and reduce the risk of wildfires, the BC Wildfire Service and Sea to Sky Natural Resource District will be supporting Lil'wat Nation and Lil'wat Forestry Ventures in conducting a cultural burn covering up to 5.6 hectares in the Pemberton Zone of the Coastal Fire Centre.

The burn site is approximately 40 km west-northwest of Pemberton, in the Lillooet River valley, between North and Sampson Creeks, upslope of Qám̓tmin̓twal̓ Stswaw̓cw (where North Creek joins the Lillooet River).

Smoke may be visible from Pemberton Meadows and from certain vantages within Village of Pemberton and Mount Currie. The exact timing of this burn will depend on weather and site conditions, but it could begin as early as Saturday, April 11. Burning will proceed if conditions are suitable and allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, though smoke may also linger in the following days.

As of Thursday September 17, 2025, category 1 fires are allowed.
Definition of a campfire category 1;
No bigger than 0.5 meters wide. X 0.5 meters tall.

Effective at 12:00 (noon) Pacific Daylight Time on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025, the Category 1 Open Fire (campfire) prohibition for the Coastal Fire Centre will be lifted in the Campbell River, North Island Central Coast and the Sunshine Coast Natural Resource Districts. Campfires remain allowed in Haida Gwaii. See the map for more information:https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/public-safety-and-emergency-services/wildfire-status/fire-bans-and-restrictions/coastal-maps/25_coastal_map_s10s12_prohibition_color_info_8x11l_sep_15.pdf

Campfires remain prohibited throughout the rest of the Coastal Fire Centre. Check with your local government or other jurisdictional authorities before lighting a fire of any size since they may have their own restrictions in place.

Category 2 and Category 3 open fire prohibitions are still in effect throughout the Coastal Fire Centre. For more information on open fire prohibitions within the Coastal Fire Centre visit: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/wildfire-status/prevention/fire-bans-and-restrictions/coastal-fire-centre-bans

A Category 1 Open Fire (campfire) is defined as any fire smaller than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide.

Human-caused wildfires are completely preventable and divert critical resources away from lightning-caused fires. Always practice safe, responsible fire use where permitted.

To report a wildfire, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone.

Update: Bastion Peak Fire(V31708).
For update information click on the link: https://wildfiresituation.nrs.gov.bc.ca/map

Community Engagement:
• The BC Wildfire Service is working to develop longer-term management strategies and tactics for the Bastion Peak fire.
• BCWS staff will continue to liaise with First Nations, industry partners, and local governments to ensure prompt communications regarding fire activity and operations.

Public Safety Messages:
• Slope stability is a safety issue, as burning debris has been rolling downslope and causing growth upslope on this incident.
• The public is asked to stay out of the immediate vicinity of this incident as the area in unstable and this incident is Out of Control in status.

Operations:
• The fire continues to be active today, with moderate downslope growth and some upslope growth
• Crews will continue to be onsite to prevent further growth downslope and we will work to contain the fire on the flanks where it is safe to do so
• Higher, inaccessible portions of this fire will continue to be active until weather conditions change
• Heavy helicopters will continue to bucket on active flanks as required
• Heavy equipment has been brought in to open the Green River Forest Service Road - to bolster it as we explore future containment options on workable ground
• To the East is a burn scar from 2020, which may slow down potential growth in that direction
• Forward operational planning will be used to determine future achievable objectives, in cooperation with local First Nations and community partners
