Employee Spotlight: Cindy

With 18 years in emergency telecommunications, Cindy has built acareer rooted in leadership, training, and support. She began as a 911 and fire call taker and dispatcher before moving into Training and Quality Assurance 10 years ago. Over the past 6 years, she has led the Operations Support Services Unit as Manager, overseeing a dedicated team focused on Training, Quality Assurance, and Client Services.

In her role, Cindy ensures training and QA programs continue to evolve alongside industry standards and best practices, helping deliver professional and reliable service to clients every day.

What Cindy enjoys most is watching her team collaborate, problem-solve, and grow together. She understands that no two trainees, challenges, or QA trends are ever the same — each situation requires a unique approach and strong support system.

Driven by her commitment to leadership, Cindy strives to be the best support possible for her team, knowing firsthand the demands and challenges of the industry.

Outside of work, Cindy is a devoted wife and proud member of a blended family with five sons. Whether spending time at the cabin in the sunshine or snow, enjoying her hot tub, or prioritizing self-care, she believes balance is essential for longevity in this field.

Thank you, Cindy, for your dedication, leadership, and passion for supporting both your team and the community.

Remember

911 is for emergencies only.

If someone’s life, safety, or property is at immediate risk, call 911 right away.

For non-urgent concerns, please use your local non-emergency line. Keeping 911 available helps emergency responders reach those in crisis faster.

During National Police Week, CanOps recognizes the dedication, resilience, and professionalism of police officers across Canada.

As part of the public safety community, we understand the commitment it takes to serve and protect. Police officers work every day in complex and often challenging circumstances to help keep communities safe, uphold the law, and respond when they are needed most.

We acknowledge their important contribution to public safety and the strength required to carry out this role with integrity and care. We extend our appreciation to all officers for their service and continued commitment to protecting Canadians.

This Monday, May 4, marks the beginning of Mental Health Week.

At CanOps, working in public safety means we see every day how closely mental health and wellbeing are tied to the work we do—and to the people and communities we serve.

Mental health is not separate from operational readiness or resilience—it is part of it. This week is a reminder to keep the conversation going: to check in with yourself and with each other, to make space for honest conversations, and to recognize that support is not a weakness, but a strength.

We encourage everyone in our community and across public safety to take a moment this week to reflect, connect, and reach out where it matters.

Carrie began her journey in public safety in 2016, starting on the Help Desk before transitioning into the Training Unit, and most recently stepping into her current role as Marketing and Sales Specialist.

She is thrilled to be back working in marketing, a field she is truly passionate about. Carrie previously worked with the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League for over 10 years, and describes this opportunity as a “full circle” moment returning to her marketing roots.

Her new role has been a great fit, and she has enjoyed working on the launch of the new website, contributing to brand identity, and leading the development of marketing materials. She is also responsible for supporting initiatives that help grow CanOps and strengthen its presence.

Across her various roles at CanOps, Carrie has developed strong communication skills and places high value on the relationships she has built with her colleagues. She has also gained a deep appreciation for the important work the organization does in high-pressure public safety environments.

Outside of work, Carrie enjoys hockey, cheering on her kids in their sports, and spending family time at Turtle Lake. She has been married to her husband Evan for 10 years, and they have three children: Ethan, Noah, and Bria.

As we continue to celebrate our telecommunicators this week, we had the opportunity to sit down with Leah and learn more about her experience behind the headset.

Leah has been a 911 Call Taker and Police Dispatcher for the past four years and also steps into an Acting Supervisor role. When asked what she enjoys most about the job, her answer was simple but powerful—being able to send help on someone’s worst day and guide people through moments they may never forget.

Like many in this line of work, some calls stay with her more than others. Calls involving children or animals can be especially difficult. Leah shared that hearing a child on the line is something that always hits close to home. She manages those moments by focusing on her own family and making sure her children know how to call 911 if they ever need to.

There are also unique challenges that come with the job. With her spouse serving on shift with Prince Albert Fire, there are times when the reality of the work feels even closer. Despite that, she emphasized the importance of checking in with one another and the strong support system among her coworkers. Knowing they have each other’s backs makes all the difference.

One call that stands out to Leah involved a young child who called because something didn’t seem right with her mom. That call led to help arriving quickly during a medical emergency. It’s moments like that that reinforce just how important it is to trust your instincts and reach out for help.

For those considering the role, Leah highlights strong communication skills and the ability to multitask under pressure as essential. Just as important is teamwork—supporting one another through difficult calls and tough days is a big part of the job.

Her message to the community is a meaningful one: telecommunicators are there during some of life’s hardest moments, and they truly care. Staying calm, cooperating, and answering questions when calling 911 helps ensure help can get there as quickly as possible.

Thank you, Leah, for the important work you do and for sharing your story.
