Most people think wildfire season starts when they see smoke in the sky.

In reality, it starts months before that.

By the time temperatures rise and the forest dries out, it’s often too late to make meaningful changes around your home or cabin. The work that makes the biggest difference — clearing fine fuels, addressing the immediate zone, removing ladder fuels — is best done in the spring.

Snow is still on the ground in many areas right now, but this is exactly when planning should begin.

What actually happens during a wildfire risk assessment?

A lot of people have asked me what a wildfire risk assessment actually involves, so I wanted to explain it in simple terms.

When I come out to a property, I’m not there to scare anyone or hand out a pass/fail grade. The goal is to identify practical, realistic steps that reduce wildfire risk — not eliminate it (because that’s not possible).

I look at things like:
• How embers could reach the structure
• Vegetation spacing and continuity
• The immediate area around the home or cabin
• Access, layout, and overall fire behaviour potential

At the end of the assessment, homeowners have a clear understanding of:
• What the highest-priority risks are
• What actions will make the biggest difference
• What can realistically be done now vs later

For now, I’m offering wildfire risk assessments at no cost. My goal is to help people understand their risk and make informed decisions — whether they choose to move forward with mitigation work or not.

Most people are surprised to learn that homes often don’t burn from a wall of flames — they’re lost to embers finding weak points close to the structure.

That’s why I focus on proactive wildfire risk reduction: reducing fine fuels, addressing ladder fuels, and helping property owners understand where their real risks are.

My goal is simple — help people protect what they’ve worked so hard for, before fire season arrives.

Did you know it’s not direct flame contact that burns down most homes and cabins — it’s embers?

Wind-driven embers can travel far ahead of a wildfire and ignite vulnerable areas around a structure. That’s why the FireSmart™ Immediate Zone (the first 0–1.5 metres around your home) is the most critical area to address.

Keeping this zone clear and non-combustible can dramatically reduce the risk of ignition during a wildfire.

As a firefighter with over a decade of wildfire and structural fire experience, this is where I always recommend homeowners start.
