This week, everyone seems to have a personal Ken Dryden story. I remembered Ken Dryden as his legend began by displacing Rogatien Vachon in the Montreal Canadiens net in 1971, en route to the first of Dryden's six Stanley Cups as a Montreal Canadien. Nearly 40 years after Ken Dryden played his last NHL game (won the 1979 Stanley Cup), I got to meet Ken as a peer elected Member. He represented York Centre in Parliament, and I represented Mississauga Streetsville at Queen's Park. We were both Liberals. Although we were born only five years apart in age, his body had told him to stop playing hockey long before, and I was still the goaltender for the Ontario Legiskaters - and whoever else would phone looking for a goalie. He asked about the equipment I was using, and observed that beer league goaltenders today are better protected than he was as a 1970s NHL goaltender. Talking about the difference between the helmet I wore then (and still do today), and the mask that was between his own head and the hardest hockey shots of the 1970s, he said to me, "People tend to remember me as one of the last of the 'stand-up' goaltenders. There was a reason why I played the way I did. It was to keep from getting killed!" This is so true. A goaltender never sees a shot that hits one on the helmet. All you hear is a loud 'bang' and then a reverberation for a minute or two. Modern helmets distribute the impact without harm, and make being a goaltender actually one of the safest positions in sport today. Lace on the blades again in the Hereafter, Ken. Now you can again face the shots of Guy Lafleur and Mike Bossy on Heaven's best sheet of ice.

The late Emil Kolb was an honest and plain-spoken man who offered much valuable advice to me as a new Member of Provincial Parliament in my first term (2003-2007). He served a growing Region of Peel with integrity and professionalism. All who knew and worked with Emil Kolb were enriched by the experience.

Many of us, as Liberals, are thinking long and hard about our choice for the next Liberal Party of Canada Leader. I have had the opportunity to sit and talk with Chrystia Freeland when she had first been elected as a Member of Parliament. As party members, we are genuinely privileged to have two excellent choices in Mark Carney and Chrystia Freeland. My choice is going to be Mark Carney. If you encapsulate 'Liberalism' into two words (as Pierre Trudeau once told me in 1980), those words would be "democratic capitalism." We believe in free markets. We believe in *all* the government we need, but *only* the government we need. The Leadership candidate best positioned to get a grip on Canada's economy, and get us back to sustainable surpluses, meaning an ability to afford everything we do for ourselves as a nation, is Mark Carney. I think Mark Carney as Party leader can beat the Tories, and unfortunately, I don't believe a Christia-led Liberal Party can. So for me, my decision will be Mark Carney. The foregoing is my thinking behind it. If you agree with me, and have a federal Liberal membership, I hope you'll support Mark Carney too.

This past fall (of 2023), I joined a great group of Streetsville guys for Monday night hockey. Last season, I played with a talented group in Burlington. Prior to December of 2022, I hadn't played hockey since the day the world shut down in March of 2020. It's one of life's great pleasures to put on the equipment and face the shooters again. To reach out with my glove hand and pick some guy's best shot out of the air, or out-maneuver (or out-guess) an opponent trying to deke me remains the sensation in sport I've most enjoyed since I was able to walk.

With the conclusion of the MLB wild card series and the divisional series, Toronto Blue Jays fans are howling in frustration, demanding that somebody – anybody – be fired for the 2023 playoff disappointment. Jays fans now find themselves with plenty of unhappy company. The other wild card losers fared no better than the 89-win Blue Jays, all losing in two straight: 92-win Milwaukee Brewers; 84-win Florida Marlins; and 99-win Tampa Bay Rays. In the divisional series, the 100-win Los Angeles Dodgers and 101-win Baltimore Orioles went down in three straight games: zero post-season wins. The 87-win Minnesota Twins and 104-win Atlanta Braves each managed just one win in their divisional series defeat. Also add in the disappointed fans of the ‘built for the playoffs’ 82-win San Diego Padres and 88-win Seattle Mariners: both failed to qualify for the post-season.
In the case of each such underachieving team, if somebody’s got to go, and some likely will, the team doing the shakeup will likely be hiring from the ranks of the castoffs from these nine other disappointing teams. As Blue Jays fans, let’s take some more time to reflect. The team should not find its path forward by replacing perceived management and coaching zeros with different teams’ zeros.

Nice to celebrate a birthday with Andrea Seepersaud at The Shish Mahal Indian Cuisine restaurant. They did a great job staying open with takeout through the COVID-19 years. Now, it is nice to go back in person to have the great north Indian cuisine we have enjoyed for years. In this era of food inflation, the Shish Mahal prices remain moderate compared to other restaurants we have begun to visit again. It's a gem in Erin Mills.

It was nice to get back to the Shaw Festival for the first time since 2019. The first production of the 2020s that Andrea Seepersaud and I enjoyed was , a musical at the Festival Theatre about the show biz career of Gypsy Rose Lee, the American burlesque legend of the mid-20th century. I didn't know much about the underlying story, though the play prompted me to look it up. It was a solid, three-hour performance, well acted and produced. We had first-row balcony seats, right in the centre of the theater, literally the two best seats in the house.

Here is one way to put some scale on the life of former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion. Hazel's life completely spanned the second Elizabethan era from before the birth of the late Queen Elizabeth II, through her life, marriage, and the longest reign of any British monarch to past Elizabeth's death in September of 2022.
In Mississauga, the ground-breaking and/or ribbon-cutting of few buildings or infrastructure projects of any consequence, government or private sector were not attended by Hazel McCallion. And many projects, including the Credit Valley Hospital, were conceived in large part by Hazel McCallion.
When I sought to keep the former Russell Langmaid primary school building in Streetsville from being sold to developers after it became a 'surplus school' in 2010, it was Hazel who worked with me to transfer the property from the Peel District School Board to Mississauga for its current purpose as the Cadet centre in Streetsville.
While I and the then-Councillor for Ward 9 worked to get a new GO Train station built at Lisgar, we needed Hazel's help to resolve an issue with the then-owner of the property who wanted too high a price for the land. Hazel, as she told me later, phoned the owner and said he could either take GO Transit's generous and above-market offer for the land, or the City would zone it as a drainage pond for the next 40 years. The property owner sold, and the new Lisgar GO station project came in ahead of schedule and under budget.
Hazel attended a few of my community skating events for Mississauga-Streetsville residents when I held them at Meadowvale Four-Rinks. Far from just showing up for a few minutes, Hazel laced on her skates and came out to chat with me and residents on the ice, and usually stayed - and skated - for about an hour.
And rain or shine, Hazel led the Streetsville Bread and Honey and Santa Claus parades each and every year.
Whatever Hazel's faults, and she had them, Hazel was the 'real deal' as our Mayor. There will never be another Hazel, though Hazel certainly made many people, including me, believe that we too could step up and make the City of Mississauga just a bit better by dedicating our time and our energies to our fellow residents through public service.

Warm wishes for a Happy New Year of the Rabbit to all our many friends, neighbours and colleagues from Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan. Andrea and I cherish the piece of our souls that became forever Chinese as we built our friendships among the community in the GTA, and were embraced by it. May the New Year bring prosperity, good fortune, health and fulfillment to one and all.

One of the most frequent conversation starters I hear at public and social events has long been, "How are the cats?" Soon after my first election, I began taking our then-eldest cat, Obi-Wan Cat to public events such as the Streetsville Santa Claus Parade, Bread & Honey, and outdoor events that focused on seniors or kids. Obi-Wan was a big sensation. He and his housemate, a smaller and more reclusive female named Bébé (French word for 'baby') adorned our Christmas cards each year. Obi-Wan passed away in the summer of 2015, some five weeks before his 16th birthday. I noted his passing in my MPP web site for the many people who knew him by name. Bébé reluctantly did a few events with me during the following months. And then I met Merlin at Pet Valu in Meadowvale, some seven months after we had lost Obi-Wan.
Merlin took community involvement to new heights. As good as Obi-Wan always was, Merlin was head-and-shoulders better! He didn't just ride in the Santa Claus Parade, he walked with me for part of the way. He remains the only cat ever to speak (or meow) from the podium (twice each!) at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto and at Celebration Square in Mississauga. For the balance of my time in elected office, Merlin was so in demand that we often received community event invitations specifically including him by name! After elected office, Merlin still attended some events with me, and enjoyed many more walks in the park, retail visits, and rides in the car, something our other two cats were never keen on. Early in the pandemic period, late March of 2020, an aggressive cancer claimed Bébé a week before her 15th birthday.
Merlin, 13 when he was adopted in early 2016, enjoyed excellent health as he aged. In late 2021, however, he was diagnosed with progressive kidney failure and with thyroid problems. Merlin responded well - and beyond his vet's expectations - to his medication regime throughout 2022. In the first week of 2023, however, even as Merlin and we and Merlin's vet hoped for him to reach his milestone 20th birthday, Merlin's liver failed.
On January 13, the last of our signature cats crossed the feline 'Rainbow Bridge' to be reunited with his first owner, an elderly lady who had passed away shortly after she entrusted Merlin to Ninth Life Cat Rescue of Oakville. Ninth Life had placed Merlin at the Pet Valu store in Meadowvale where Merlin adopted me.
Merlin tells his story from a cat perspective on his own page. Our home has never before been without a fur baby and house lion patrolling the halls. It is a quieter, sorrowful, and emptier place now. Our friends and their dogs, whom Merlin and I met so often on his cat walks at McCarron Park in Churchill Meadows, won't see Merlin any more. It will take a long time for Andrea and I to get over Merlin.
If those who read this can find it in their heart to do so, please make a donation in Merlin's memory to Ninth Life Cat Rescue of Ontario, the angels of feline deliverance who unite kittens and cats who would otherwise die of neglect or be put down, with owners whose lives and homes are enriched for years with their own cat. Merlin was simply the best cat we ever had. We and his friends will always remember him and his many heartwarming contributions to our western Mississauga communities of Lisgar, Meadowvale, Streetsville and Churchill Meadows.
A Happy New Year of 2023 to one and all.
