One of the most frequent conversation starters I hear at public and social events has long been, "How are the cats?" Soon after my first election, I began taking our then-eldest cat, Obi-Wan Cat to public events such as the Streetsville Santa Claus Parade, Bread & Honey, and outdoor events that focused on seniors or kids. Obi-Wan was a big sensation. He and his housemate, a smaller and more reclusive female named Bébé (French word for 'baby') adorned our Christmas cards each year. Obi-Wan passed away in the summer of 2015, some five weeks before his 16th birthday. I noted his passing in my MPP web site for the many people who knew him by name. Bébé reluctantly did a few events with me during the following months. And then I met Merlin at Pet Valu in Meadowvale, some seven months after we had lost Obi-Wan.
Merlin took community involvement to new heights. As good as Obi-Wan always was, Merlin was head-and-shoulders better! He didn't just ride in the Santa Claus Parade, he walked with me for part of the way. He remains the only cat ever to speak (or meow) from the podium (twice each!) at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto and at Celebration Square in Mississauga. For the balance of my time in elected office, Merlin was so in demand that we often received community event invitations specifically including him by name! After elected office, Merlin still attended some events with me, and enjoyed many more walks in the park, retail visits, and rides in the car, something our other two cats were never keen on. Early in the pandemic period, late March of 2020, an aggressive cancer claimed Bébé a week before her 15th birthday.
Merlin, 13 when he was adopted in early 2016, enjoyed excellent health as he aged. In late 2021, however, he was diagnosed with progressive kidney failure and with thyroid problems. Merlin responded well - and beyond his vet's expectations - to his medication regime throughout 2022. In the first week of 2023, however, even as Merlin and we and Merlin's vet hoped for him to reach his milestone 20th birthday, Merlin's liver failed.
On January 13, the last of our signature cats crossed the feline 'Rainbow Bridge' to be reunited with his first owner, an elderly lady who had passed away shortly after she entrusted Merlin to Ninth Life Cat Rescue of Oakville. Ninth Life had placed Merlin at the Pet Valu store in Meadowvale where Merlin adopted me.
Merlin tells his story from a cat perspective on his own page. Our home has never before been without a fur baby and house lion patrolling the halls. It is a quieter, sorrowful, and emptier place now. Our friends and their dogs, whom Merlin and I met so often on his cat walks at McCarron Park in Churchill Meadows, won't see Merlin any more. It will take a long time for Andrea and I to get over Merlin.
If those who read this can find it in their heart to do so, please make a donation in Merlin's memory to Ninth Life Cat Rescue of Ontario, the angels of feline deliverance who unite kittens and cats who would otherwise die of neglect or be put down, with owners whose lives and homes are enriched for years with their own cat. Merlin was simply the best cat we ever had. We and his friends will always remember him and his many heartwarming contributions to our western Mississauga communities of Lisgar, Meadowvale, Streetsville and Churchill Meadows.
A Happy New Year of 2023 to one and all.
