🚨 Test Your Smoke Alarm Day 🚨

Today, September 28, is Test Your Smoke Alarm Day! Rama Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging all community members to take a few minutes today to test every smoke alarm in their home.

Working smoke alarms provide early warning when a fire occurs and can give you and your family valuable time to get outside safely. Press and hold the test button on each alarm until it sounds, and make sure everyone in your household knows what the alarm sounds like and what to do when they hear it.

Remember to have working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. If an alarm does not sound when tested, is damaged, or has reached the end of its service life, it should be replaced.

🚒 Rama Fire crews are also currently making their way through the community as part of our Annual Smoke Alarm Program. Firefighters will be visiting homes to check smoke alarms, help identify alarms that may need attention or replacement, and make sure community members have the protection they need.

If you see our crews in your area, give them a wave and take a few minutes to complete your smoke alarm check with them.

A few minutes today could make an important difference in an emergency. Test your smoke alarms today and make sure your home is protected.

🍁 National Day of Service 🍁

Today, September 11, we recognize National Day of Service, a day to reflect on the compassion, courage and unity shown by Canadians in times of tragedy.

It is also an opportunity to recognize the first responders, emergency personnel, volunteers and community members who continue to step forward when others need help.

Rama Fire & Rescue Service encourages everyone to take a moment today to remember those affected by the events of September 11, 2001, and to recognize the spirit of service that continues to strengthen our communities.

🚨 Orange Warning - Air Quality 🚨

The air quality warning for our area has now been upgraded to Orange.

Wildfire smoke from northwestern Ontario is causing very poor air quality and reduced visibility in our area. Conditions may improve later today, but the smoke could return or worsen again late Friday or Saturday.

🌫️ Today’s Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) 🌫️

The closest official AQHI reading for our area is currently 10+, which is considered very high risk. The air quality is expected to gradually improve, with the AQHI forecast to decrease to 8 tonight and 4 on Friday. However, smoke may return and conditions could worsen again late Friday or Saturday. Conditions can change quickly, so please continue to monitor local updates.

During heavy smoke, everyone can be affected, even those who are normally healthy. Please limit your time outdoors and consider postponing outdoor sports, activities and events.

🌫️ Protect Yourself from Wildfire Smoke 🌫️

🏠 Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible and use an air filter or portable air cleaner if available.

😷 If you need to be outdoors, keep your time outside as short as possible. A properly fitted N95 or equivalent mask can help reduce your exposure to smoke particles.

🩺 Watch for symptoms such as irritated eyes or throat, headaches and coughing. Seek immediate medical attention for serious symptoms such as chest pain, wheezing or a severe cough.

🤝 Please check in on Elders, young children and anyone nearby who may be more affected by the smoke.

N95 masks are available at the reception area of the Rama Health Centre.

Please continue to monitor local alerts, as air quality can change throughout the day.

⚠️ Wildfire Smoke and Local Fire Risk Update ⚠️

Community members may notice hazy conditions, the smell of smoke and reduced visibility today. Wildfire smoke from northern Ontario has moved into our area, causing poor air quality across Simcoe and Muskoka.

Air Quality Alerts are in effect for Wednesday, July 15, continuing into Thursday and possibly Friday. A Yellow Level Heat Alert also remains in effect.

🔥 Rama’s current fire risk level is MEDIUM. 🔥

Please continue to use caution with outdoor fires, ci******es and anything that could create a spark. Never leave a fire unattended and make sure it is completely extinguished before leaving the area.

😷 Protect Yourself from Wildfire Smoke 😷

▪ Limit strenuous outdoor activity.

▪ Keep windows closed when possible.

▪ Use the recirculate setting while driving.

▪ Consider wearing a well-fitted N95 or similar respirator when outdoors.

▪ Move to a location with cleaner air if you begin experiencing symptoms.

N95 masks are available for community members at the reception area of the Health Centre.

Wildfire smoke may cause irritated eyes, nose or throat, headaches and coughing. Seek immediate medical assistance for serious symptoms such as chest pain, wheezing or a severe cough.

Extreme heat may pose a greater health risk than wildfire smoke. If your home becomes too hot, seek a cooler location in the community, even if there is smoke outside.

Please continue monitoring local alerts, the Air Quality Health Index, updates from Rama Fire and other reputable sources.

Cooling Station Available at MASK Arena

With another heat warning in place this week, Rama Fire is again reminding community members that a drop-in cooling station will be available at the MASK Arena for anyone who needs a place to cool down.

This is a casual drop-in space where community members can take a break from the heat, rest, and cool off as needed.

Reusable water bottles will be available for people to use at the cooling station and at the Rama Fire Hall.

As always, anyone who is out walking or spending time in the community is welcome to stop in at the Fire Hall to cool down, refill water, and take a break from the heat.

Please check in on Elders, family members, neighbours, and anyone who may need extra support during this heat event.

For emergencies, call 911.

Stay cool, drink water, and take care of one another.

Yellow Level Heat Warning

After already seeing heat warnings recently, our area is heading into another stretch of extreme heat this week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Yellow Level Heat Warning for Simcoe and Muskoka, beginning Monday, July 13, 2026. This heat event is expected to continue until Wednesday evening or possibly Thursday evening, with Tuesday expected to be the peak of the heat.

Hot and humid weather can affect anyone, but Elders, young children, people working outdoors, people with medical conditions, and pets may be at higher risk. Humid air can also affect air quality, which may make it harder for some people to breathe or spend long periods outdoors.

Please take extra care:

• Drink plenty of water, even before you feel thirsty.
• Limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
• Take breaks in the shade or in a cool indoor space.
• Check on Elders, family, neighbours, and anyone who may need extra support.
• Never leave children, pets, or vulnerable adults in a parked vehicle.
• Watch for signs of heat illness, including dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness, confusion, or fainting.

Call 911 right away if someone is confused, unconscious, has stopped sweating, or their condition is getting worse.

Stay cool, drink water, and take care of one another.
