🚗 HAPPY FRIDAY, May 29th! 🎉
WARM WEATHER = MORE DISTRACTED DRIVING 📱☀️⚠️ As spring sunshine arrives, drivers admit to relaxing their focus—nearly half of Canadians use their phones at least once every 10 trips, despite knowing it increases crash risk by 4–5 times.
Why it's dangerous
- Distracted driving accounts for more than one in four fatal crashes each year in Canada.
- Reading or sending a text takes your eyes off the road for a minimum of 5 seconds—at 90 km/h, that's the length of a football field driven blind.
- Using a phone (handheld or hands-free) makes you four times more likely to crash, and reduces reaction time to levels similar to impaired driving.
Simple, high-impact habits- Put your phone in the glovebox, back seat, or "Do Not Disturb While Driving" mode before you start the engine.
- If you must use GPS, program it before you leave and use voice guidance only—never text, scroll, or type while moving.
- Pull completely off the road into a safe parking area if you need to make a call or respond to a message.
- Remember: in BC, fines start at $543 with 4 demerit points; in Ontario, first offense is $615–$1,000 with 3 demerit points and a 3-day suspension.

🚗 HAPPY WEDNESDAY, May 27th! 🎉
HOT PAVEMENT = TIRE BLOWOUT RISK 🔥🛞⚠️ As late-May temperatures climb, hot asphalt heats tires beyond the air temperature, and underinflated tires flex more, building dangerous heat that can cause sudden blowouts—especially at highway speeds.
Why it's risky
- For every 5°C increase in temperature, tire pressure rises by about 1 PSI, which can lead to overinflation and reduced traction.
- Underinflated tires combined with summer heat and highway speeds create excessive heat buildup that leads to tire failure.
- Hot pavement surface temperatures are higher than air temperature, adding friction heat directly to tire rubber and accelerating wear.
Simple, high-impact habits- Check tire pressure monthly when tires are cold (before driving or after sitting 3+ hours), using a quality gauge and your vehicle's recommended PSI found on the driver's door frame.
- Before long trips, inspect all tires (including the spare) for bubbles, cracks, uneven wear, cuts, or bulges—signs they're vulnerable to blowout.
- Don't overload your vehicle; excess weight + heat + speed = blowout recipe.
- If a tire blows: grip the wheel firmly, ease off the gas (don't brake hard), and steer straight until you can pull safely off the road.
