The Physics of Air Flows in Chimneys and Houses
The newest section of our website is for those who want to take a deep dive into the physics of chimney flows and their relationship to the houses they serve. If you are a professional in the wood heating business, or you are a homeowner with questions about how your stove, fireplace or furnace is working, you might find the answer here.

This section deals with content that is covered in the Chimney section but gives more technical background and some of the scientific reasons for air flows in chimneys and houses.

This section contains three pages.

The first is a link to a 62 page book titled Reliable Chimney Venting
The second is a 30 minute video called How to Conduct a House Pressure Test
And the third is a nine minute video of a factory-built fireplace backdrafting through its outdoor air duct (shocking)

How to Build and Maintain a Wood Fire

John Gulland has been building and studying wood fires for over 45 years, and has been giving advice on building good fires for almost as long as a writer and seminar leader. The ideas in this article began to form all those years ago and have been refined continually ever since. Of course, in time you will develop your own techniques that suit your heater, firewood and house heating needs, but this article offers a great place to start. As noted in the article, when you can consistently build fast-lighting and clean-burning fires, you have mastered a valuable skill, so reach around and pat yourself on the back.

We hope you enjoy the article.
