🕊️ Discover our four swallow species and learn to identify them! 🕊️

The presence of swallows in our region indicates a viable habitat for many species. In New Brunswick, we have four species of swallow. They can be recognized by their plumage and physical characteristics, as well as by their unique nests:

Bank Swallow: The Bank Swallow is characterized by a dark brown band on the breast and a slightly forked tail. This species burrows in the sand along waterways and winters in Mexico and South America, adapted to a dynamic, ever-changing habitat.

Barn Swallow: The barn swallow attracts attention with its long forked tail, metallic blue back and buff belly. It prefers to nest in human structures such as barns and bridges, and migrates to warmer regions of Central and South America during the colder months.

Cliff Swallow: The Cliff Swallow has a distinctive white patch on its forehead and a short tail. It chooses cliffs, bridges and building exteriors as nesting sites, forming large colonies before migrating to South America for the winter.

Tree Swallow: The Tree Swallow is distinguished by its blue-purple plumage on the back and white on the belly, finding refuge in tree cavities and wooden nest boxes and migrating to milder climates such as Florida and the Caribbean during the winter.

Unfortunately, swallow populations have declined sharply in recent years. We encourage you to protect their habitat by adopting environmentally-friendly behaviours.

Now, for the first time in its history, gardening has taken on a role that transcends the needs of the gardener. Like it or not, gardeners have become important players in the management of our nation’s wildlife. It is now within the power of individual gardeners to do something that we all dream of doing: to make a difference.

At its core, Aster Group specializes in providing environmental services focusing on birds and plants, coupled with consultation services for communities gearing up for climate mitigation, adaptation, and environmental planning. The cooperative's commitment to sustainability extends beyond its consultancy work; it is deeply embedded in its ethos and day-to-day operations.

In 2019, Aster Group made a significant stride towards environmental stewardship by acquiring an electric vehicle (EV). The initial vision was to share this eco-friendly asset with non-profit members, recognizing the challenges they face in sourcing vehicles for their work in Sackville. The absence of a local rental service and the need for environmentally conscious transportation options for NGOs prompted Aster Group to make their EV accessible to non-profit members at a competitive cost.

However, the world threw unexpected challenges their way in the form of the global pandemic, causing disruptions and halting many initiatives. Despite the setbacks, Aster Group stayed resilient, adapting to the new normal by embracing online tools to continue their vital work in environmental consultancy and cooperative development support.

Sabine Dietz, the driving force behind Aster Group, remains optimistic about their original plan to provide the EV to non-profit members. She envisions a future where NGOs, once again requiring vehicles for their operations, can benefit from Aster Group's forward-thinking initiative. The cooperative's dedication to both environmental sustainability and community support remains unwavering.

Local businesses, like Aster Group, play a crucial role in the prosperity of communities. By keeping resources within the town, supporting local needs, and adapting to better serve the community, Aster Group embodies the symbiotic relationship between local businesses and the people they serve. Their commitment to the well-being of both the community and the ecosystem reflects a holistic approach to business that goes beyond profits.
