“I'm just being honest” is not permission or an excuse to be cruel.

I spoke with a group of women about this concept last night. Dumping harsh, unnecessarily critical judgments or reckless words on someone is not a step toward greater honesty. If we want to communicate with self-possession, we’d be better off removing the phrase “I’m just being honest” from our vocabulary altogether.

Being honest is critical. Many of us have also experienced how dishonesty can quietly creep into our everyday lives. When I say, “I’m fine,” when I’m actually overwhelmed or hurt.

When I tell my husband I don’t want a gift for our anniversary, while secretly hoping he’ll get me one. Those are moments that deserve more honesty.

Honesty isn’t about saying everything we think, exactly when we think it. It’s about saying what is true, not dumping every impulsive thought we’ve ever had on someone else.
