Both cities offer Basement Flooding Grant Programs that help homeowners reduce the risk of basement flooding.

Depending on eligibility, the program can help cover upgrades such as:

✔ Backwater valve installation
✔ Disconnecting weeping tiles and redirecting them to a sump pump
✔ Sump pump systems and battery backups

These improvements help protect homes from sewer backups and heavy rain flooding.

Many homeowners don’t realize these programs exist until after a flood, but they’re designed to help prevent it.

Some real-life comparisons to specific radon levels in your home. Health Canada suggests your home should be less than 200 Bq/m3, World Health Organization recommends less than 100 Bq/m3. The US EPA is in the middle at 143 Bq/m3.

Here's 2023 data from Take Action on Radon for St Thomas and Woodstock 91 day radon tests. Of 115 households, 15% tested above Health Canada's level (200 Bq/m3) for remediation to prevent health issues (mainly lung cancer).

Important to note, the World Health Organization's level for remediation is only 100 Bq/m3 and 45% of the homes tested in St Thomas and Woodstock are above this level!!

The only way to know is to test your house for radon! Radon is colourless, odorless and invisible, and is also naturally occurring.
