The "you'd never know" facts

Radon is completely colourless, odourless, and tasteless — the only way to know if it's in your home is to test.
It comes from natural uranium decay in soil and rock, so it seeps up from the ground into any building, old or new, with or without a basement.
Radon can be just as high in a brand-new home as an old one — construction age isn't protective.
Levels can vary a lot house-to-house even in the same neighborhood, since it depends on soil conditions and how the home was built, not just geography.

Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in Canada after smoking, and it's the #1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
It causes an estimated 3,200 lung cancer deaths in Canada every year — that's higher than deaths from car accidents (1,898), carbon monoxide (300), and house fires (109) combined.
