Some of you may have heard. I know this may be scary for those of you who were expecting and planning to have an epidural, please don’t stress too much!! There are other methods of pain management that can help you get through the painful parts of labour, including, but not limited to hiring a doula (continuous labour support)! 😘

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is asking expecting families to review pain management options with their care providers, in response to a North America-wide shortage of epidural catheter kits. This supply-chain issue may impact the ability for care teams to provide labour epidural analgesia for pregnant women, epidural anesthesia for caesarean sections, and epidural analgesia and anesthesia for intraoperative and postoperative use in general.

These kits are used primarily by anesthesiologists to manage pain in women while they labour and deliver. They are also used to provide postoperative pain management for major abdominal and chest surgeries.
