Oh how a Little creature must feel in the big world around them. Little changes in our world could be gigantic ones for them.

I suppose that is the same for our children. As they start their childcare and school journeys.

I feel the atmosphere of change lately as well. The few fallen leaves on the pavement. The hustle and bustle of back to school shopping. The Parent Groups posting asking for recommendations.

The unknown. What will this year bring?

What's on my mind.

I do use this platform as a way to share my reflections.

I have changed the way I share information about my program. Especially the children since I first started.

Yes, I know it's nice to see the smiling faces of the children during activities. However, their privacy and safety matters. As does the privacy of my own home.

I do not mind sharing small, carefully thought out photos that relate to my reflections.

I am aware often that shows well thought out play invitations.

What about the aftermath? The mess? Or the Process?

This was a single child, who was exploring their new environment. Who has yet to master the skill of explaining emotions or the coping skills to help them through the process.

Instead, this child explored every toy in the main room and play room. This was not the day to establish the expectations of the program. Rather, this play was there to allow them to explore their feelings and thought process in a safe space. I did pick up a few items throughout the play to limit tripping hazards.

Not every child responds this way in a new environment. Just like they do not dump and transfer toys every day in the program. Though with the age groups I work with, it is fairly consistent.

Play is at the core of learning. We forget this as we get older and advance our skills.

Working in Early Childhood Education I have found that reminding myself that even the basics are important. A child needs to dig, throw, run, jump, ECT.

You can't not run before you walk. You can't walk before you stand. Every step is laying the foundations for the next development.

With two weeks until School Resumes, I figured it would be a great time to remind Families that the First few weeks, you will be packing lunch.

If this is your child's kindergarten year, now is the time to start practicing opening and closing the lunch boxes. How to open bags and close them. How to open prepacked snacks.

Our wonderful Educators and Staff of course will be there to assist when required, but I am sure you can imagine a class full of kids that can independently open their lunch, can be overwhelming for everyone at the beginning.

I have been packing school lunches for over 18 years at least. My oldest child has allergies that most of the School lunches were not a risk we would take.

My youngest child can be a rather regimented eater. They tend to want the same lunches over and over.

I went back through another page I Admin and pulled a few of the lunches I have packed for my youngest over the years. I personally love the bento style.

I have a menu I follow for the Dayhome. Which is provided to the families weekly. Keeping in mind the Canadian Food Guidelines. There are items I serve my child that I would not serve the Littles due to choking risks.

There are a handful of events my Family goes to every year. Though I will admit, I almost did not go this year.

The Renaissance Festival NL has always been a favourite of mine. Topsail Beach Pirate Day was also today. I know that is a great Family event and typically is the same weekend as the Renaissance Festival.

Two Family fun events I highly recommend. The Renaissance Festival is on tomorrow as well. There are a few new things for Littles, lots of skilled Crafts, Food Vendors and much more to see!

Now off to plan our costumes for next year so I don't almost miss it again or regret my heavy layered costume in August heat.

Before the Littles arrived this morning, I knew it was too beautiful to not take a walk.

As I got the wagon ready, my own child went on a snail search. That has been a persistent theme for a few weeks in the group.

Much to my glee, one of the items on my scavenger list was found.

A baby snail! I mean Baby snail. So small you can still see through the shell. Smaller than an eyeball sprinkle.
And yes, the Littles were happy to see this find.

I figured it was about time to re-introduce myself since it's been 2 years since I did it last. Yes, I looked it up.

So here it goes " Hello dear friends, I'm Ms. Lilly."

I am proudly the Mother of two children. My oldest is soon 20. My youngest 10. A lady does not often tell their age. I was much younger than my oldest is now when I first started to care for children. Considering they are an adult entering College, it's safe to say I am on the older side. Not too old to run and roll and jump with toddlers, not yet anyway.

Over the years I have had to adapt to different learning styles. I'll admit, rasing a child that is Neurodiverse, comes with experience. The kind of experience that no book can teach you. You learn through them, through courses, therapy, behavior management, OT, ECT. Even then, it does not mean I know everything. That's what continued education is for. Classes and webinars. Books and even colleagues. To Guide and Teach means you are prepared to always be learning and advancing.

I truly love what I do.
I have a booklet with references who have witnessed this. I am certain my current and many of my past Families would agree.

They may also tell you I am a little bit "quirky."
To which I will remind you all, Steve from Blues Clues, Blippi, Danny Go... Even Einstein, are all a bit the same.
We need to be. To be able to delight in the wonderment of childhood play and learning.

I sing, I laugh, I dance, I cook, I bake, I sew, I create.

Most of all, I care.

I care about those little moments that often are overlooked. I care about those first words. Those moments that they light up because they have found connections with words and emotions. Those moments of "firsts" like when an infant realizes how a ramp works and spends 15 minutes finding anything and everything that can roll down it. Or the moment a preschooler observes the fragile wings a ladybug hides behind the hard red shell.

I care with a big heart because I know what it's like to be a Parent, trusting your child with someone else.

I had so many things I wanted to post about in my reflections this week.

Yet something happened today that truly brought it all full circle.

I have been asking the Universe for a sign for a few things on my mind. I believe I have received it today.

I finally could hear well enough to leave the house. We went to karate and stopped at the grocery store on the way home. I make a list. I go through each department. I rarely back track. Yet today I did. As I turned the corner, I must have froze. I know I was likely awkward in the exchange and excitement. I did not realize in that moment how important it was for me. Or for my child.

Ms T. Was there. Getting her groceries. One of the lovely ladies who cared for my youngest. Ms.T Ms.B Ms.M. three ladies who truly went above and beyond for my little guy.
I will never be able to thank them enough for what they did for him or my family.

Not minutes later, I received a message from one of the Little's Mother,who I cared for. An unexpected visit and gracious gift for the Dayhome.

Both events today, were a reminder of how strong we are to say hello and goodbye.

When we are graced with the opportunity to see them, after they have left our care, It does not matter if it's a year or seven years. It does not matter if they remember us or not.

We remember them.

Each Little face and hands that we have guided and watched grow. Little glimmers of faces and memories, reminders of the Littles we have cared for before the current ones.

It's an honour to be an ECE. An honour to be trusted with every child we get to help on their journey. Even if it's only a short little while.

I am a big supporter of our Local Community. Scouts has been an amazing and beneficial program for my own child.

I was so pleased about the first year of Chipmunks. More excited that we have enrollment available for the Second year!

1st Goulds remains the only Chipmunks group in Newfoundland. We hope to see this program grow and develop and be available to all Scouts groups.

Is there anything better than a small child who is entirely fascinated by insects and nature?

From the very first days I knew this Little would always be a "nature" kid. Each child has their own personality. Which I greatly love seeing it develop as they grow.

Looking for ladybugs, snails, spiders, worms and butterflies keeps us busy.
