This landmark legislation formally recognized refugees and affirmed principles of diversity and family reunification, profoundly shaping Canada’s population, culture, history, arts, and food traditions. The multicultural Canada we know today exists largely because of this policy shift and the collective efforts of communities, activists, and advocates who envisioned a more inclusive country.
Today, fifty years later, in a global context marked by rising xenophobia and growing challenges to humanitarian immigration policies, we believe it is more important than ever to reflect on the human impact of these policies.
Through this exhibition, we celebrate the humanity, stories, and contributions of immigrants by highlighting the work and lived experiences of six immigrant artists whose practices explore migration, identity, belonging, and cultural memory.
