I’m not expecting you to know all the bookkeeping answers. I’m trying to understand how your business operates, and how you like to work.

Because the system needs to make sense for the business and owners using it, not the other way around. 💙

A cleanup is more than just getting caught up. 🧾

When I go into a file, I’m looking at the full picture: reconciliations, account balances, tax coding, payroll, how income is being recorded, and anything that looks off.

But I’m also trying to figure out why things got messy in the first place. 👀

There’s no point cleaning everything up if the same issues are just going to come back six months later.

The goal is cleaner books, better systems, and a process that’s a whole lot easier to keep up with going forward. ✨

When I open a set of books, I’m looking for more than whether everything was entered properly. 👀

I want to understand how the business actually works. How money comes in. Where it goes. What needs attention. What keeps causing extra work. And where things could be made simpler.

I also want to understand the people behind it.

How do you like to work? What feels manageable, and what’s taking up too much of your time? What do you want your business to make room for?

The people who trust me with their books have different goals, routines, and responsibilities. Those things matter when we’re figuring out a process that will work well for them.

Funny thing about helping other people build better business systems: eventually you have to take your own advice. 😂

Amanda Moffatt Bookkeeping has grown quite a bit over the last few months, which has meant better systems, clearer processes and accepting that I don’t need to do absolutely everything myself.

Three numbers can tell three very different stories about the same business. 📊

💰 Revenue tells you how much money your business is bringing in from sales.
📈 Profit tells you what’s left after your business expenses.
🏦 Cash available tells you what you actually have on hand right now.

And they are definitely not the same thing.

A business can have great sales and very little profit. It can be profitable on paper and still feel tight on cash. Or there can be plenty of money sitting in the bank, but some of it is already spoken for.

This is why I’m such a believer in actually understanding your numbers, not just keeping track of them. 💙

You don’t need to know every accounting detail. But knowing a few key numbers can give you a much clearer picture of how your business is really doing. ✨

Good bookkeeping should give you more than organized transactions and reconciled accounts.

It should give you useful information about your business. 💙

Things like:

📈 Are you actually profitable?
💰 Who still owes you money?
📊 Are your expenses starting to creep up?
🔎 Is there something in your numbers that deserves a closer look?

You don’t need to spend your evenings studying financial reports 😂. But you should be able to trust your numbers and understand what they’re telling you.

That’s a big part of how I approach bookkeeping.

Keep the books accurate. Build good systems. Explain what matters.
And give business owners better information to make decisions with. ✨

Using one bank account for both business and personal spending might feel simpler—but it usually creates more work later.

Keeping them separate makes it easier to:

🧾 Track business expenses
📊 Understand what the business is actually earning
💰 Prepare accurate GST/HST and tax information
🔍 Find transactions when questions arise
🧘 Spend less time untangling everything later

A dedicated business bank account and credit card create a clean boundary around your business activity.

And if you occasionally use the wrong card? It happens. Save the receipt, make a quick note and tell your bookkeeper. One mixed transaction is much easier to handle than months of mystery purchases.

Good systems aren’t about being perfect. They’re about making the right thing easier to do. 💙
