One of the simplest financial systems a business owner can create is a separate savings account for taxes.

When all your money stays in one account, it’s easy to look at the balance and assume more is available than actually is.

Instead, regularly move money into a separate account for:

💰 GST/HST collected
🧾 Income or corporate taxes
👥 Payroll deductions, when applicable

This money isn’t extra cash—and separating it makes it much harder to spend accidentally.

The exact amount you need to set aside will depend on your business, so this doesn’t replace proper bookkeeping or tax advice. But it does create a clear boundary between money available to operate the business and money you’ll eventually need to remit.

A small system now can prevent a very stressful surprise later. 💙

One of my current projects didn't start with bookkeeping.

It started with 60+ documents and emails, information for multiple companies, and a lot of moving pieces. 📂

Before anything goes into accounting software, I need to understand what's there, what's missing, and create a system that makes everything easier to manage. That's one of the projects I've been working on over the last few weeks.

The QuickBook Online files are now set up, everything has been organized, and we have a clear roadmap for what comes next. ✅

It's not the most glamorous part of business development, but it's one of the most important. When good systems come first, everything else gets a whole lot easier. 💙

Seeing money in your business bank account can feel reassuring—but that balance doesn’t tell the whole story.

Some of that money may already belong to:

💰 CRA for sales tax or payroll deductions
📆 Bills that haven’t been paid yet
🧾 Suppliers or subcontractors
🏦 Loan and credit-card payments
👩‍💼 You, for wages or owner’s draws

Your bank balance tells you how much cash is sitting there today. It doesn’t tell you how profitable your business is—or how much is actually safe to spend.

That’s one of the reasons accurate bookkeeping matters. It helps you see what the money is for, what’s already committed and what the business has truly earned.

Clarity creates better decisions—and much calmer business ownership. 💙

I've been thinking a lot lately about the kind of bookkeeping business I am building. 💙 Not just the work I do, but how I want my clients to feel when we work together.

Over the last few months, I've worked with businesses that were beautifully organized, and others that came to me with folders full of emails, statements, receipts, and a whole lot of "Where do I even start?" 📂

The funny thing is... I enjoy both. Somewhere along the way, I realized I've been following the same approach every single time.

✨ Create calm.
📋 Build good systems.
🌱 Teach instead of confuse.
🤝 Be someone people can count on.

I started calling it The Moffatt Method. 💙

It's not a program or a checklist. It's just the standard I'm building my business around, and the experience I want every client to have.

A little business update: I’m now scheduling new bookkeeping projects for October. 💙

The last few months have reminded me just how many capable business owners are carrying financial stress behind the scenes.

Your books don’t need to be perfect before you ask for help. They can be behind, disorganized or simply no longer keeping up with the business you’ve built. That’s exactly where calm support and better systems can make a difference.

One little thing that can save you a surprising amount of time...

Keep one main folder for your business.

Inside that, create:
📁 One folder for each year
📅 Twelve monthly folders
🧾 A folder for receipts
🏦 A folder for bank and credit card statements

That's it. It doesn't have to be complicated.

When everything has a home, it's easier to find what you need, easier to keep up with your bookkeeping, and much less stressful at tax time.

Simple systems usually beat complicated ones. Every time. 💙

It's been a busy few weeks.

I've been spending a lot of time right here, helping clients untangle years of paperwork, organize files, answer questions, and build systems that will make bookkeeping easier going forward.

A lot of people picture bookkeeping as entering numbers into software.

The reality is that it often starts with conversations, emails, folders full of documents, and figuring out the best way to organize everything before a single transaction gets entered.

Every project is a little different, and that is the best part of the work I do.

This little office has become home to some really exciting projects lately, and I'm grateful for every business owner who's trusted me to help them.

Now... back to work. 😊☕

Bookkeeping doesn't usually start in QuickBooks.

Sometimes it starts with a folder full of emails, bank statements, invoices, receipts and documents that have built up over time.

Before anything gets entered into the books, I spend time organizing everything, creating a filing system, identifying what's missing, and building a plan for what comes next.

It might not be the most exciting part of the job, but it's one of the most important.

Once everything is organized, the bookkeeping becomes much more efficient, and everyone has a clearer picture of where things stand.

It's one of those behind-the-scenes steps that clients don't always see, but it makes a big difference.

People often ask me why I chose bookkeeping.

The answer is simple.

I love bringing order to chaos.

There's something incredibly rewarding about taking a pile of statements, receipts, and unanswered questions... and turning them into clarity.

Because at the end of the day, bookkeeping isn't just about balancing numbers.

It's about helping someone breathe a little easier.
