A Thunder Bay health clinic tested whether a photo taken by a non-specialist could catch diabetic eye disease before a patient ever saw an eye doctor. From December 2022 through October 2023, Port Arthur Health Centre piloted a program where non-eye-health staff photographed the retinas of consenting patients with diabetes during regular primary care visits, using autonomous AI to interpret the images on the spot - no ophthalmologist required to flag a scan for follow-up. Researchers published the results in Ophthalmic Epidemiology in December 2024: the approach was feasible to run in a real primary care office, and patients were accepting of it.
