Q1, ☑️. Let’s get it in for Q2. Only 9 more months until the end of the year. Yes, COVID is still here and yes we’re all still in lockdown but now is the time to lock in.

If that New Years Resolution hasn’t panned out, hit the reset button and realign your goals. You haven’t failed unless you’ve quit, and even then it’s not a total loss unless you didn’t learn anything from the experience.

Making it past Year 1 is a major milestone for businesses. For those that do make it, here are common reasons why:

🗓Planning - proper planning prevents poor performance. SMBs have a smaller margin for error, limiting their ability to manage surprises. Avoid this by planning early and reviewing those plans often so that you can adjust as your business grows. Things to consider going into Year 2: planning and reviewing operating practiced and budgets, product/service lines, growth opportunities, and market changes.

👤 Founder Independence - for SMBs this can be a major constraint. Owners/Founders often find themselves absorbed in the day to day operations and being the sole decision maker. Major no-no. Not only does this lead to bottlenecking it also takes away from their ability to Plan, thus impeding the business’ success. Building out key processes and systems can help alleviate this constraint and allow for Owners to hand off responsibilities and accountabilities without losing quality.

📈 Scalability - Businesses that reach highs in Year 1 often fall off in Year 2 because they can’t sustain that level of production due to factors such as a lack of planning and leadership dependence. Avoid this by being forward thinking and putting an emphasis on building strong processes and operations. The goal is to replicate successful outcomes with little or no variance.

🍀Luck - sometimes it’s just that simple. It’s not to downplay the work that businesses put in to be successful. But sometimes, you just get lucky; you might land a big client, go viral, or have great timing. Luck is good! The key here is to be able to recreate that “luck” so that you can engineer success. When luck becomes repetitive, it’s skill.

It’s Monday and we’re lucky enough to have a bonus day to recover from the weeks we’ve just endured. As much as we strive to stay on the grind 24/7, it’s important that we’re managing our physical, mental, and emotional health. Burnout is real, and it carries real consequences when it comes to your business.
_________
🤒: the easiest one to spot. Illness is the immediate consequence of not taking care of your body. Your immune system begins to deteriorate and you’re susceptible to get sick. Manage your health by eating right and making time to work out.

🤬: the closer you are to burnout, the shorter your fuse is. It’s a mix of a number of different factors: growing frustrations, toll on your physical health, etc. The key here is to know your triggers and plan for them — don’t make the mistake of trying to work through this, it’ll only hurt the final product and your team.

🔋: no matter what you do, you find yourself tired and lethargic, unable to accomplish what you normally do. When faced with this, set smaller goals/tasks, and schedule in more breaks. An additional boost of caffeine does’t hurt either.

🧘‍♂️: it’s hard enough to focus as is. Compound that with any of the other burnout symptoms and you’ll find it almost impossible to get anything done. To help with your focus, try breaking down your tasks to small bits and start on work that requires the most energy first.

📉: is the sum of all of the factors listed above. If you find yourself putting in the hours and not getting anything done commensurate to the effort, STOP. Take some time away from the work and focus getting YOU better.

It’s Superbowl Sunday. Like football, business is all about taking risks. Sure you’ll probably fail the first few times, (unless you’re TB12 🐐) but when you do make it, you’ll walk away with so much more.

Stay focused and keep grinding.

February is known to be a popular hiring window. Take some time and brush up your resume and start applying. I recommend doing it every 6 months or so, even if you aren’t actively seeking new employment. You never know when an opportunity comes knocking.

🗣 it’s the weekend...rest if you need to. If you don’t, spend the time honing a craft, learning a skill, or building a business. Don’t be ordinary and don’t make this weekend like every other weekend.
