Do you maintain a healthy work-life balance? I know that we all talk about it, but how hard do we actually try, and are we successful?
Tomorrow, our son Aidan will return home for a holiday. He currently works in Germany, and I haven't seen him since September. Needless to say, I am looking forward to spending quality time with him during his visit.
As I make plans for activities like golfing, fishing and just hanging out, I find myself questioning whether I spent enough time with our children when they were younger and at home. Initially, my response is that I didn't. However, upon deeper reflection, I realize that I actually did. After selling my first business, I became a stay-at-home dad for approximately eight years. At that time, Aidan was eight, and our daughter, Avery, was six. Throughout those eight years, I was actively present for every significant moment, and I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. It provided me with the opportunity to be a parent and build my relationship with both of them. Maybe the amount of time I spent with them when they were younger is why I miss them more now.
While having a successful career and supporting your family is important, the relentless drive for achievement can sometimes divert your attention from what truly matters. Therefore, it is important to take the time and be fully present today in order to avoid any regrets tomorrow.
Here are some tips to achieve a healthy work-life balance:
1) Know your values: Spend some time thinking about what is important to you in life. Consider your passions and interests, and make time for the things that make you feel alive.
2) Practice time management: Do you ever wonder where the day went? Calendars, apps, and to-do lists can be useful tools to keep track of how you spend your time.
3) Set boundaries: If you find it hard to say no, you could try to set limits on your work time and pre-plan time for other activities. Let people know when you will be offline. Step away from your phone, turn off your work emails, or go internet-free for a few hours.
4) Enjoy your work: "Do what you love and love what you do" is a great catchphrase and something to strive for.
5) Nurture relationships: Positive relationships and social support help build resilience and lead to more adaptive ways to cope with stress. Strong relationships may take time to nurture and develop but they are essential to a well-balanced life and good mental health.
6) Focus on Your Health: We are only here once, and we only have one body, so take care of yourself.
7) Have Downtime: Taking time to rest and recharge is vital to help you succeed in what is important to you. Schedule regular time off for yourself each week to relax, read a book, play sports, spend time in nature, or just do nothing. Choose any activity you enjoy.
Enjoy your family as much as you can.
