Giving your child melatonin will not help your child sleep through the night.

It might help them GET to sleep at night, but it will not help them stay asleep. This is the general consensus of sleep specialists, researchers, and doctors worldwide. The National Sleep Foundation has found that, “...when scientists conduct tests to compare melatonin as a “sleeping pill” to a placebo (sugar pill) most studies show no benefit of melatonin.”

Melatonin is a hormone and can have serious side effects when taken long term.

Unless medical tests have specifically revealed a deficiency, then melatonin supplements is not the solution to your child’s sleep struggles.

I’ve worked with many parents who unfortunately had turned to melatonin to correct sleep issues that weren’t medical to begin with. I’ve helped countless families wean off melatonin permanently and leaving them sleeping better then they ever have.

This is the #1 question parents ask me.
And here’s the truth:

👉 Your child didn’t lose the ability to sleep. Melatonin is NOT the answer.
👉 You didn’t break anything.
As kids grow, their brains get louder.
More imagination. More worries. More awareness.

Nighttime is when all of that shows up.

Most big-kid sleep struggles aren’t about sleep at all — they’re about confidence and safety at bedtime.

What feels helpful (staying until they fall asleep, extra reassurance, later bedtimes) often keeps the anxiety going.

What actually helps?
Calm routines.
Clear, loving boundaries.
Consistent responses that rebuild confidence. Having real life tools they can use to regulate big emotions that will carry into their every day life not just bedtime.

Sleep doesn’t have to be a battle. You just need a plan.

When my daughter suddenly became afraid to sleep alone, I had to remind myself that this is a totally normal stage.

As kids grow, so do their imaginations, worries, and awareness — and nighttime becomes the place their brains process all of it.

School-aged kids will start experiencing:

✨ Bigger imaginations (becoming stronger at night!)
✨ More worries from school + friendships
✨ Increased awareness of “what ifs”

With the same strategies I teach my clients — predictability, comfort, and confidence-building — my daughter learned she was safe and capable to handle bedtime independently.

One of the strategies being this:
Offer a Safe Space to Talk BEFORE Bed

Taking 10 minutes to check in—without solving or judging—can ease their mind before they get into bed.  This work can be incorporated into the last part of their day before routine begins or one of the first steps.

Ask open-ended questions like:

* What’s something that made you laugh today?
* Was there anything that felt tricky or confusing today?

🤫Secret weapon: Your calm presence and willingness to listen can be more powerful than any fix-it solution.
BONUS TIP – using a worry box during this exercise helps to give those thoughts a place to go—besides their brain.

#2016- Where it all started

Here I am after a long labour, (and full of pitocin) I gave birth to my first baby.

My baby who DID NOT sleep...

My new baby, whom I dreamt of having for as long as I could remember, wasn’t sleeping.

I wasn’t coping.

The advice out there that I found was guilt, fluff, and judgement.

And so I set out to fix it on my own.

Our lives were transformed within days.

I didn’t know it then, but this was the beginning of everything I do now.

I was asked constantly by friends and family what I did, how I did it, and I would tell them. I would talk and talk and talk about everything I knew.

I was passionate about helping parents get their baby sleeping and was naturally lead to this career. My certification and mentorship with THEE top pediatric sleep expert in the world and joined an international sleep consultant sisterhood. Opening my business and learning all of what that meant.

Still going strong in 2026 💪🏼 Supporting mothers is the most rewarding feeling and the best part about my job is hearing them say they feel better, like themselves again!

When you’re ready I’ll be here, ready to help you get you and your family better sleep.

Sleep well,

Daniella

Here’s the not-so-secret secret: babies are all different. Sleep isn’t a parenting competition and early STTN isn’t a trophy 🏆.

Biology, temperament, and timing have a lot to do with when your baby starts sleeping through the night.

Also—plot twist—you can teach sleep skills. Babies can learn how to fall asleep, connect sleep cycles, and not need a full production at every wake-up… when they’re ready. It’s not ignoring them, it’s coaching tiny humans who missed the memo on sleep.

So if your baby is still waking? You’re not failing. You’re just in the tutorial level. 😴

And I can be you’re sleep teacher 🙂💛
