Took home 1st place at my first competition this past weekend! Thank you to the for hosting this event giving everybody an opportunity to improve our skills and knowledge. Thank you to all the judges for showing me easier and better ways to build a better shoe. Thank you for the sponsorship and constant motivation. And thank you for always kicking my ass in gear and never letting my learning process plateau. Now onto the next!

This Belgian draft among a couple others was sadly in an accident that included a drunk driver knocking over the carriage that she was pulling. She’s been in the pasture for a few months recovering now and this was her first time being able to come back in to get re-shod. For not having her feet done for a while this mare was an angel to work on, and yet I was definitely still soaking wet after having to hold her feet up for that whole session!

After trimming two mules and a horse I got assigned to another horse that needed sliders on. Going from only doing half a set a day to trimming three on top of a half set let me know that I actually have been improving. The thing about sliders is that the nails have to sit flush with the shoe so if you don’t like where your nails are coming out you need to make sure you pull it out before you drive it all the way. First set of sliders was definitely a success!

Worked on my first pair of feet with foundering. Had to cut his heels down a little bit lower than usual to allow the wedge pad to properly do its job and lift the plantar side back upwards. Put some sole pack underneath to help alleviate the pressure off his toes as well.
