What an incredible honor! I'm profoundly grateful to have received the Canada Legacy Honors Award for Cultural Heritage and Community Impact. This award symbolizes a journey of dedication and service that began far from here.
From serving my community in rural Uganda at age five to working in construction to fund my education at 12, and then shifting my focus to advocacy and community initiatives at 19, every step shaped my unshakeable spirit of resilience.

Upon arriving in Canada, I encountered new challenges in navigating the system. But that innate drive to help led me to forge my own path, focusing on supporting newcomers and contributing to society. This commitment remains the heartbeat of my work.

My deepest gratitude goes to every difficult moment that forged my resilience. Thank you to everyone who has recognized my contributions, especially within our marginalized Black community. To my amazing team members, your support in pushing against the odds is invaluable. And to my beloved wife, your understanding and patience are the bedrock of everything I do.
This award inspires me to continue striving for greater impact. Thank you all for being part of this journey.

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Siu Mee Cheng, PhD, MHSc., BASc., CHE, will be delivering the Keynote Address at the International Conference on Healthcare and Social Work!

Conference Theme: "Health in a Social Perspective"

This vital conference, exploring critical insights into healthcare and social work, will take place virtually from Toronto Metropolitan University on June 20th and 21st, 2025, starting daily at 9:00 AM EDT.

Dr. Siu Mee Cheng brings an unparalleled wealth of experience, boasting over 29 years of leadership in the health and social services sectors, spanning local, provincial, and national government levels in Canada. Her extensive work has focused on crucial health and social policy and care issues, including integrated care, food insecurity, housing security, women’s issues, public health, and poverty reduction.

Dr. Cheng has provided transformative leadership to organizations dedicated to health and social care integration, significantly impacting vulnerable populations such as women, newcomers, and the homeless. Her profound contributions to society have been widely recognized, including being named one of WXN's 2023 Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada and receiving the King Charles III Coronation Medal for her efforts in supporting those most in need.

A distinguished alumna of Toronto Metropolitan University, Dr. Cheng holds a PhD from the institution. She currently serves as a highly respected Sessional Instructor for the Faculty of Arts, Ted Rogers School of Management, and the Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education at Toronto Metropolitan University.

We are honored to have Dr. Cheng share her invaluable expertise and vision on the theme "Health in a Social Perspective," offering profound insights into the interconnectedness of health and social well-being.

We are absolutely glad to announce our distinguished Keynote Speaker for the International Conference on Healthcare and Social Work:
DEVA-MARIE BECK, PhD, RN, DTM
International Co-Director for Nightingale Initiative for Global Health, Canada
Deva-Marie Beck is a highly accomplished Canadian/American nurse, author, educator, and renowned Florence Nightingale scholar. She dedicates her time as a volunteer International Co-Director of the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health (NIGH).
Currently, Dr. Beck is leading an exciting new chapter for NIGH. In collaboration with a growing global network of nurses, she is developing an updated approach to NIGH's core mandate: empowering nurses, student nurses, retirees, and concerned citizens to amplify their voices. Her work focuses on sharing their insights, commitments, and concerns for a healthier, more compassionate world across the global public sphere.
To further this mission, Dr. Beck has actively engaged with Toastmasters International (TI), serving as an Area Director for TI District 64 (2018-2019). Through eight years of dedicated work, which included delivering 40 required public presentations and undertaking related leadership activities aimed at fostering the personal and professional growth of her peers, she achieved TI's highest education award: Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM). She now leverages this credential to develop innovative strategies that educate, encourage, and engage nurses and concerned citizens to powerfully share their voices and narratives at local, regional, and global levels.
