Some of you may know of my love for birds and a huge part of growing native plants is based on supporting our avian friends. The Hamilton Naturalists' Club gives so much back with talks, guided hikes, volunteer opportunities for advocacy and preservation of natural lands. Here is an upcoming talk happening - feel free to like and or follow their page :-)
Bird Study Group: Loggerhead Shrike - On the Brink of Disappearance in Ontario
Join us to hear Helmi Hess, Recovery Biologist with Wildlife Preservation Canada on the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike Recovery Program, discuss efforts to prevent the bird's extirpation from Ontario.
The Eastern Loggerhead Shrike, a migratory subspecies that breeds only in Ontario, is on the brink of disappearance. With less than 100 individuals counted annually in recent years, a hands-on approach is necessary to prevent the extirpation of this unique predatory songbird. Since 2003, WPC has led a multi-faceted approach to its conservation - monitoring and protecting the wild population, conducting habitat restoration, and releasing captive-bred shrikes into the wild. Find out what is involved in the program, its success stories and what you can do to help!
