Today, after completely neglecting this dried up Amaryllis, leaving it unwatered, on a sunny ledge for the whole summer & fall. I finally went to toss it....discovering it had viable roots underneath. It's been re- potted and watered...now to wait and see đź‘€

Pushing the limits of our Western scientific imagination, Zoë Schlanger speaks about her book The Light Eaters, and how embracing plant intelligence can upend the hierarchies we’ve placed around living beings—ourselves included.

So wonderful!

We’re very pleased to announce our DVSA front garden has received Pollinator Paradise Certification, an initiative of Butterflyway Hamilton, Environment Hamilton & the Hamilton Naturalists' Club. The garden is just one of many certified gardens across the city, providing a habitat for native pollinators and enhancing Hamilton's unique biodiversity. Today's rendering is for a young family looking to get maximum enjoyment from their urban yard. Veggies to lounge areas, BBQ to play zones - the requested grass area could be eco-lawn or, as time permits, converted to more veggie or native plant gardens with a central bird bath or tuteur.

Sweet little side elevation and layout detail for a beautiful Lunenburg home. Keeping the Town happy with intentional sightlines at the intersection and organized native plantings to resist deer activity.

Some of you may know of my love for birds and a huge part of growing native plants is based on supporting our avian friends. The Hamilton Naturalists' Club gives so much back with talks, guided hikes, volunteer opportunities for advocacy and preservation of natural lands. Here is an upcoming talk happening - feel free to like and or follow their page :-)

Bird Study Group: Loggerhead Shrike - On the Brink of Disappearance in Ontario

Join us to hear Helmi Hess, Recovery Biologist with Wildlife Preservation Canada on the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike Recovery Program, discuss efforts to prevent the bird's extirpation from Ontario.

The Eastern Loggerhead Shrike, a migratory subspecies that breeds only in Ontario, is on the brink of disappearance. With less than 100 individuals counted annually in recent years, a hands-on approach is necessary to prevent the extirpation of this unique predatory songbird. Since 2003, WPC has led a multi-faceted approach to its conservation - monitoring and protecting the wild population, conducting habitat restoration, and releasing captive-bred shrikes into the wild. Find out what is involved in the program, its success stories and what you can do to help!
