Keep mowing as long as the grass is still growing. That usually slows down once daytime temperatures stay below 10°C, often late October in the GTA. On the final cut, go a little shorter than usual, around 2 to 2.5 inches. Long grass left under snow mats down and invites snow mould by spring. One more thing: clear the leaves before that last mow. Leaves left on the lawn over winter smother the grass underneath.

The real window: once most of your trees have dropped their leaves, typically late October inland, early to mid November closer to the lake. A healthier spring garden starts with what you do this fall.
Before the ground freezes:
• Add mulch around vulnerable plants to protect their roots
• Use burlap to shield evergreens from harsh wind and winter sun
• Cover bare garden beds with mulch, compost, or healthy leaves
• Remove diseased plants and debris
• Plant spring bulbs about 6 to 8 weeks before the ground freezes
• Continue watering trees, shrubs, and perennials while the soil remains workable
• Leave some healthy leaves and plant stems to support beneficial insects
