3/5| I was really enjoying this for about an hour before realizing it could have worked just as well as a TV pilot for a full-blown series. Props to Kane Parsons for becoming the youngest filmmaker to direct a financially successful new franchise. That’s genuinely impressive, and far from an easy feat. That being said, "Backrooms" only scratches the surface of what feels possible within this world. When the film works, it’s genuinely terrifying. Parsons stages several pulse-pounding sequences that kept me on the edge of my seat, and it certainly helps to have a strong cast carrying the material.
My main issue is that once the film starts digging deeper into the lore, it doesn’t seem to have much to say. Or maybe one movie simply isn’t enough to fully explore all of its mysteries. As a result, I was left with more questions than answers. I don’t necessarily mind that, but I do wish the ending had landed with more impact. There’s enormous potential in this universe, and I genuinely hope we get to see more of it in the future. For now, though, I’m still not completely convinced by "Backrooms."
