Did you know that the Moon is not the only planet that waxes and wanes?

So does Venus!

In Ancient Greece, it was Pythagoras who first figured out that the Morning Star and Evening Star were one and the same - the lovely Venus!

Venus as the Morning Star (rising before the Sun) was known as Venus Phosphorus. Phosphorus whose name means Light Bringer is the son of Astraeus and Eos - the God of Dusk and Goddess of Dawn.

Venus as the Evening Star was known as Venus Hesperus. Hesperus was the half brother of Phosphorus being the son of Atlas and Eos.

Astrologically, there is a difference in Venus’s expression when she is Morning Star versus the Evening Star. (The 2 Gods Phosphorus and Hesperus are pictured below as torch bearers.)

If the Sun has moved ahead of Venus in the zodiac wheel, you were born with Venus Phosphorus (Morning Star). An example of this would be having your Sun in Virgo and Venus in Leo. Venus Phosphorus feels first and thinks/asks questions later. Desire is a huge motivator and can provide a source of empowerment but learning to temper emotional impulses is an aspect of the lessons Venus holds in this condition.

If Venus is ahead of the Sun in the Zodiac Wheel, you were born with Venus Hesperus (Evening Star). An example would be Venus in Gemini when the Sun is in Ta**us. Venus Hesperus is more introverted in the experience of emotions. Quieter on the surface but the emotional nature is no less intense! Those born with Venus Hesperus like to distill events to find their meaning. The lesson of Venus Hesperus is to learn to express instead of emotionally bypassing experiences through rationalization or developing resentment by stifling feelings.

And just a fun little fact here - when you look at Venus in the sky, observe if she is casting an aura (especially below her). The Sumerians called this aura a “beard” and they believed that when Venus put on her “beard”, she was stepping up as the Queen of Heaven and it was a sign of good fortune to come.
