But when I overlapped emerging AI literacy skills with the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations, I found a 60–75% overlap. What our students need already exists in our schools — the real work is bringing those skills to life.

Canada is world-class at AI research — and near the back of the pack at putting it to work.

The Macdonald-Laurier Institute reports that only 21.2% of Canadian workers used generative AI on the job as of mid-2025 — less than half the U.S. share of 45.6%.

And a KPMG–University of Melbourne global study ranks Canada 44th of 47 countries on AI training and literacy, with fewer than one in four Canadians saying they've received AI training.

The gap isn't the technology. It's capability.
