HEAT has obviously been an inspiration for us for some time. Such that we did a direct homage a few years ago. With the passing of Val Kilmer there has been the expected outpouring of grief and appreciation, as much for the imaginary characters he played as the man himself.
Why was HEAT so great and why did Val Kilmer resonate so in HEAT? There are two man lightning rod attractions to the film: the to-date unparalleled gunplay and the romantic foil dynamic of two opposite and equal warriors dueling. The two most famous scenes are the street fight and the diner. But while the mythos and spectacle of these two are certainly magnetic, they are, themselves, difficult to relate to. And yet, the vast majority of the this community feels a resonance with the film. And the reason for that is that the supporting roles, played with perfection by all but exceptionally by Val Kilmer, are formed with authenticity in their camaraderie that exceeds the uncanny.
Val Kilmer's character, in particular, plays who the Instagram generation can see themselves in. Young, eager to prove himself, mentored by a veteran, ambitious, competent but not necessarily confident, challenged by the sudden serious consequences of decisions he made with the impetuous mindset of invincibility found primarily on young men. And when those consequences visit his family, there is a clear allegorical connection to the dilemma and guilt complex of the modern veteran.
And such is a great reflection of the overall theme: that the psychology of warriors and intimate violence pervades uniforms, laws, ethics and objectives. That it is consistent and the same no matter what window dressing it wears.
In our homage to Val Kilmer, J wears our KH11 sunglasses, our driving gloves and our suit in a now-discontinued Loro Piana glendplaid fabric. He carries a Mk18 with a UH-1. Had we done this shoot today, we would have J wear our KH9 Wide wayfarers, which are a closer match to what Val Kilmer wore on screen. In comparing the two, you can see how the shoulder padding of the 90s era different greatly from what we use now.
