Spring Clean Your Business

- Take stock of the people you are following on social media

Do the people/organizations you follow still represent you and your brand?

On each of your social media channels take the time to review and unfollow those individuals who are posting spammy material or who don’t add any value to your time spent on social media.

If you’re connected to a person on Linkedin and choose to unfollow them, you’ll remain connected but you won’t see their updates in your feed and they won’t be notified that you unfollowed them.

To download all your connections from Linkedin into an excel sheet which you can sort by name, title, organization, do the following:

*Click the “Me” icon at the top of your Linkedin homepage

*Select Settings & Privacy from the dropdown

*Click the privacy tab at the top of the page

*Under How Linkedin uses your data section, click change next to download your data

*Your data will be downloaded to an .xls file

- Conduct a Social Media Audit

A social media audit helps you see what’s working on social, what can be improved, and see new opportunities as part of your social media strategy.

*Social Media Audit Questions and Exercises*

Is your profile picture the same across all platforms?

Are your profile descriptions the same and consistent with your website copy?

Are your banner images consistent and clear?

Did you sign up on a platform you no longer use? Quora? YouTube? Pinterest? You should delete those accounts.

Do you have a spreadsheet that documents the url to your social channels, along with the number of fans, followers and the date of your last post? If not, create one.

Check if your profile is complete on the platforms you’re on.

Do a search on your company for any imposter accounts.

Review your top 4-6 competitors. What platforms are they on? How many fans/followers do they have? How often are they posting on each platform? What content is receiving the most engagement?

Social Media audits should be conducted at a minimum once per quarter.

Spring Clean Your Website
- If you updated your website, request Google to recrawl it so you'll appear in search quicker.

Google will automatically crawl your website when you update it with new content, but it takes time.

You can request google to recrawl your website which will take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Be patient.

How to request Google recrawl your website:

Login to your Google Console or google(dot)com/search console.

Insert your website url using the "URL Inspection Tool" at the top of the page.

Google will run a live test on the url to see if there are any indexing issues.
If any issues are identified, try to fix them.
Submit "request indexing"

Requesting a recrawl is beneficial if you’ve created new content and want it to be found in search results.

You can confirm if it has been recrawled by googling your website to see if the updated content appears.

- Check your links

It’s very frustrating when a user clicks a link on your website and it doesn’t work.

It gives the impression you don’t do regular housekeeping, can hurt your credibility and SEO ranking.

If you have a blog, check the links works.

Also check links to your social media profiles.

Check links in your footer. Are visitors directed to the correct content?

Check links on your static pages

If you have a press kit that you share, check the links there also work.

There are a number of free or paid link checker tools available. One that I use regularly is deadlinkchecker [dot] com.

Spring Clean Your Business

- Review your website copy on static pages

Today is a day to take time to re-read your entire website and make note of the language.

Is it still consistent with your brand and mission statement?

Are any images due for an update?

Has there been a change in staff or existing images that haven’t been updated in a while?

Static webpages are those which don't change frequently like your homepage, about page, etc.

If you are looking for royalty-free images, you can find some on the below websites:

Unsplash [dot] com

Pixabay [dot] com

Tip: If you are looking for images with your brand colors, you can enter the HEX color in the search bar and all images with that color will be shown to you.

A HEX color is expressed as a six-digit combination of numbers and letters defined by its mix of red, green and blue (RGB).

Spring Clean Your Business

- Review Your Branding, Traffic Sources and Competitors

Your brand is like your business' personality, and just like a human personality, it can change over time.

Take a look at the brand you are portraying on your website: your logo, your chosen color scheme images used, the font used, and your brand voice.

Does your brand still reflect your mission & values statement?

Does it reflect the personality you want your clients to associate with your business? If not, put the wheels in motion to develop a new style that better suits your image.

Take some time to review your analytics - where does traffic come from?

Are any clients sending direct referrals to your website? Is most of your traffic organic or paid? Has there been an increase or decrease in visitors?

It’s better to be recognized on a few social platforms where your ideal customers are rather than having a presence everywhere.

After you checked your analytics, don’t forget to check your competitor's websites.

Where is their traffic coming from? Do they have paid ads to drive traffic? What keywords are they using?

There are dozens of free tools available to do this but one I use is “similarweb [dot] com”.
