And here's why that matters for your positioning.

Women don't see the world in isolated silos.

Over the last season of my life, I had to step back from my business for a while.

 If you’ve been listening to my podcast, you’ll know I referenced this back in July.

My life demanded my full attention in other ways as I was caring for my mom at the end of her life.

And during that pause, I realized something deeply important:

Self-leadership isn’t about holding it all together or powering through. It’s about leading yourself through uncertainty with honesty, awareness, and compassion.

Cultivating the mindset and skills of self-leadership, especially when you feel stretched thin, or when life asks you to slow down and reassess, is what creates your foundation for continuing success in life.

Self-leadership is the art of learning, adapting, and growing in response to your experiences. It’s the ability to tap into your own competence, to face your gaps honestly, and to keep showing up with intention.

It’s not about control.

It’s about conscious direction.

I want to touch on something that often gets overlooked in the conversation around leadership and success, and that’s the power of seasons.

We live in cycles. There are seasons for expansion, for rest, for building, and for recalibration.

Yet so many of us have been conditioned by hustle culture to believe that we have to operate at full capacity all the time.

That’s just simply not true.

One of the most important forms of self-leadership is honoring where you are in your season, whether that’s full bloom or quiet renewal.

Be patient with your process. Be faithful to your season.

I invite you to redefine what success means for you, not based on anyone else’s metrics, but based on what truly matters right now.

Your conditions for success might include rest.

They might include saying no.

They might include joy, creativity, or a deeper connection.

And that’s leadership.

True leadership starts with how you lead yourself, how you honor your energy, your vision, your truth, and how you create the environment that allows you to thrive.

Because when you’re grounded, confident, and self-led… everything around you begins to align.

When Life Calls My Business Gave Me the Freedom to Answer

The past 90 days have been...a journey. I had to step back from my consulting business and limit my client base as I had to move my mom into memory care due to dementia. It’s been a time of mixed emotions, patience, and a surprising amount of laughs in between the tears.

Anyone who’s had a loved one with dementia knows how disorienting it can be. One moment, my mom is convinced I’m still 12 (oh, to be that young again!), and then next, she's asking if I'm secretly switching her sugar with salt just to “mess with her.” (I’m not! But sometimes I do wonder: is it dementia...or is she just expertly gaslighting me?)

What I’m most grateful for is the flexibility entrepreneurship has given me to be there for her. Running my own business means I get to set my priorities based on the moments that matter most, like sitting with her for hours reminiscing—or re-reminiscing—about family stories that may or may not have happened.

But here’s the thing: I’ve missed the work too. Connecting with my clients, digging into strategy, and helping them make their mark is a huge part of who I am. Now that I’m back, I’m ready to bring that energy again, with a few new insights in tow.

5 Comments I Hear When Clients Don’t Claim Their Value And How To Fix It

Talking about ourselves and what we do can be one of the most difficult conversations when developing value propositions within our marketing.

Let’s face it, understanding how to call out your value is hard when the thing you know how to do is so effortlessly innate after years of working in your field.

That is not to say you have not gone through the hard knocks of learning your area of expertise.

However, it does limit your awareness as to how to bring your value forward within conversations and the written word.

Today I have compiled 5 common phrases I hear and how you can immediately shift your thinking if you find yourself saying the same things.

1. “But, Wendy, each project I work on is different!”

Many people struggle to showcase their value due to unique project outcomes. Focus on identifying common themes and outcomes your offer provides. Develop case studies and testimonials highlighting specific, quantifiable results to build credibility.

2. “No one is going to pay me more than industry standards!”

Billing hourly undervalues your expertise and leads to burnout. Shift to value-based pricing. Communicate the outcomes and benefits your clients receive from your work. This will allow you to justify higher rates and reduce the need for constant new client acquisition.

3. “I’m a jack-of-all-trades, I figure out what my clients need then do it.”

Catering to everyone hinders the development of a repeatable process. Define a clear solution to your ideal client’s problems and create a standardized framework for delivering this as a service. This ensures the ability to provide consistent, high-quality results and more effective marketing.

4. “I can help anyone with this problem!”

Marketing to a broad audience dilutes your message. Define your ideal client, understand their challenge and goals, and tailor your messaging to address these aspects. Consider what makes them a great client for you and speak to this. Focused campaigns resonate better with the right audience.

5. “What if I can’t deliver on my promise?”

Imposter syndrome can seriously undermine your marketing efforts. Build your confidence through continuous learning, professional development, and client feedback. Acknowledging your achievements and capabilities will help you to overcome self-doubt and market confidently.

By addressing these limiting beliefs, you can enhance your marketing efforts and effectively communicate your value.
