In honour of Black History Month, we are shining a spotlight on these amazing women leading across Canada:

Angela James - She is nicknamed the “Wayne Gretzky of women’s hockey.” Scratch that, the “Angela James of women’s hockey” is a great enough moniker! This women’s hockey pioneer helped lead Canada to gold four times at the Women’s World Championship.

Janaya Khan - A co-founder of Black Lives Matter Canada after Jermaine Carby was killed by a police officer in Brampton, Ontario. Currently based in Los Angeles, she continues to fight for the rights of people of colour and LGBTQ people.

Cheryl Thompson - The author of Beauty in a Box: Detangling the Roots of Canada’s Black Beauty Culture, this University professor focuses on Black women’s hair and how it intersects with Canadian immigration, politics and society.

Senator Michaelle Jean - The 27th Governor General of Canada, Michaelle Jean is the first black person to hold this position. A strong advocate for women and girls, she has created shelters in Quebec for vulnerable women and built a network of emergency shelters
across Canada.

Trey Anthony - She is an award-winning playwright, actor, and comedian best known for her play: da Kink in my Hair. Speaking at TEDx, she discussed her experiences as a q***r Black woman in the entertainment industry and encouraged others to pursue their dreams.

I want to share a story from a member of our Lifted Leadership Club:

For years I didn't have the courage. I hated my job in healthcare administration, my emotionally abusive boss, and my toxic team - but I was too scared to make a change. And then the final straw, they asked me to reduce my salary because they could no longer afford me. I never felt so small and undervalued.

I quit.

There were moments of panic and anxiety; I'm not going to hide that. And it was action that help soothed these feelings. In the same month of quitting, I registered a business name and announced my consulting business.

Without toxic people pulling me down, I gained confidence. The people I met in the healthcare industry became my clients, confirming for me that even in my lowest point, people respected me and recognized my skills.

Five years later, I'm standing on my own two feet and leagues away from the scared woman I was. But I'm not standing still because there is further room for growth and more horizons to explore.

Hi, I thought it was time to reintroduce myself. My name is Marilyn, and I'm a leadership coach. I have been helping business owners struggling with balance since the start of COVID, and I still do today. Leaders and business owners alike are tired, and are wondering how much longer they can keep the torch burning for their staff and customers when they are worn out and without any resources to do so.

Like-minded people connecting in the safety of a compatible group is an excellent way for business owners to gain support. As a coach, I've taken new courses and joined several online coach groups that help me expand insight, expertise, and energy.

Being able not to develop a "hard-ass" mindset or to lead from directive, especially when everything is upside down, has taken a lot of discipline. Entrepreneurs are just built that way. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. But the current times and mother nature's disruptions may just be telling us to slow down, take a breather, learn something from collaborating in a new group, and make a new friend. Or help one you don't even know.

PS. A cup of tea is also imperative.

One of my new year's resolutions is to stop telling women they are pretty. That's right. There's nothing wrong with caring about how you look, but it's not the only thing.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I've talked about female rivalry before, but it's worth repeated mentions.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Let's talk about the female rivalry. Have you been in an environment where the women compete, compare and undermine each other? 🤚⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Evolutionary psychology, which uses natural selection to explain modern behaviours, says that women need to protect themselves (read: their wombs) from physical harm, so indirect aggression keeps us safe while lowering the stock of other women. Feminist psychology chalks up this indirect aggression to internalizing the patriarchy. - NYTimes⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

As normal as this behaviour is, this doesn't mean that we should accept it! It's time to leave female rivalry behind:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Let's stop talking badly about other women. There's nothing wrong with constructive feedback, but this is best shared directly and not behind her back.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Let's focus on our own growth instead of comparing and competing with another woman.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Let's help other women through mentorship! It can be as simple as letting her know that you are there to help when needed.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Let's publicly praise other women. Give credit for her ideas and contributions, especially if she is too modest to speak up for herself.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
