What a remarkable day in the field it turned out to be!! Making our way through a network of underground tunnels, some in near-total darkness, just to access the site. It was a true reminder of the unpredictable and hands-on nature of field work, where every step can bring a new challenge. Navigating those confined, dimly lit spaces not only tested our awareness and adaptability, but also highlighted the unique environments we often find ourselves working in.

How nice is it to mark a milestone in the company of friends?

The week at Atma Environmental kicked off with a new project #2800 for an old friend, Able Drainage.

The Atma Environmental-Able Drainage working relationship goes back over 12 years now so we’re glad to acknowledge the 28-hundred jobs milestone with a long-term client that appreciates the service we bring. Thank you to Anthony at Able for your support!

Soil Categorisation (some client wins)

In updating our corporate resume of projects today a few recent projects stand out as examples where our experience has delivered really significant disposal costs savings to the client:

Cheltenham - Prior to construction of a 10-story mixed use development we built on the work of an earlier assessment that suggested fill material (~2,100 t) was Category C. Further to our recommendations and further sampling works, we fully re-categorised the soils as Fill - resulting in a huge disposal cost savings (~$190K) to the builder.

Kew - A previous soil categorisation by another 'consultant' suggested the entire site to be Category B PIW. Following our recommendation a further program to collect additional sampling data was completed resulting in an estimated 4,840 t of fill soil to be reclassified as Category C PIW - resulting in stupendous savings ($100s of thousands) to the client.

Brighton - Additional site sampling was completed for the purposes of confirming the soil disposal categorisation at this supermarket development site identified and found Category A wastes. More detailed investigations resulted in a significant reduction of high-level soil for disposal and cost savings to the builder.

Greenvale Lakes - In order to assess and indicatively categorise 40,000 m3 of stockpiled soil material, a bespoke staged-sampling approach was developed to control costs. Attention was required to distinguish more recent dumping from earlier road excavation spoil. 60 primary samples were collected and tested. When the initial testing suggested Category C Prescribed Industrial Waste due to fluoride levels, Atma Environmental recommended further investigations ultimately proving the material was classifiable as Fill - disposal cost savings: $ millions.

Brooklyn – A previous detailed in-situ site assessment for a large industrial construction site indicated the site fill layer was Category D (Category C for disposal purposes). Site preparation works subsequently generated ~37,000 m3 of stockpiled soil. Recognizing the potential for stockpiling to have altered the categorisation, stockpile sampling was proposed and completed with the result being a Fill categorisation - disposal cost savings: $ multi-millions.

Don’t say ‘DELWP’, say ‘DEECA’

The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) is a government department in Victoria as of 1 January 2023. It is responsible for various matters related to the environment, energy and climate change.

The department was renamed from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), with which we were so familiar.

In addition, it seems that land and planning aspects under DELWP have been moved to the Dept of Transport and Planning (aka DTP, formerly Dept of Transport). DTP will now manage administration of the Victoria Planning Provisions, spatial data (e.g. aerial photos), land titles, etc.

Enforcing Bore Construction Licenses: Observation or Investigation Bore?

Recent enforcement actions by Water Authorities in regard to incorrect bore construction licences being brought out to site is putting the heat on drillers engaged for both geotechnical and environmental site investigations.

Driller licenses (and ultimately their livelihood) are at risk for doing the wrong thing. They may be liable for potentially large fines. Environmental (and geotechnical) consultants need to appreciate the difference between ‘observation bores’ (the correct licence) and ‘investigation bores’ (the incorrect licence!), and why it is important to select the correct type of license when applying online through the relevant authority.

Incorrect bore construction licenses cause problems onsite because drillers are obligated by the Water Authority to not install monitoring wells where an ‘investigation licence’ has been granted.

Not the Same –

Observation bore - a standpipe or piezometer can only be installed when an Observation Bore licence has been issued by the relevant authority (i.e. Southern Rural Water, Goulburn-Murray Water, etc.). To properly assess contamination levels in the aquifer observation bores are required for groundwater contamination investigations.

Investigation bore - The purpose of an Investigation Bore licence is to drill and sample the quality and quantity of groundwater for a permanent extraction bore i.e., a stock and domestic water bore. It is confusing but an important distinction. Once this type of bore has been drilled, it must be decommissioned immediately.

Clearly, not a good look if your consultant drills the hole and is told by the driller that it needs to be backfilled immediately (awkward!).

Trust Atma Environmental - the experts in contaminated land and groundwater, to get it done right on your next project.

(Shout out to Matrix Drilling Australia Pty Ltd for bringing this to our attention)
