Filling a vacancy and making a successful hire aren't always the same thing.

When a position has been vacant for weeks or months, getting someone hired can feel like a huge relief. But a successful recruitment process involves more than finding someone who accepts the offer.

It's also about understanding what the organization needs, clearly defining the role, assessing candidates fairly and making sure everyone has a realistic understanding of the position and workplace.

When those pieces are overlooked, employers can end up facing challenges that might have been identified much earlier.

Of course, no recruitment process can guarantee a perfect outcome, but taking a thoughtful approach helps create a stronger foundation for both the organization and the person joining it.

At S-Curve Consulting, we believe recruitment should be about more than filling an empty position. It's about helping organizations make informed hiring decisions that support their longer-term needs.

Because the goal isn't simply to hire someone. It's to make the right hiring decision for the role and organization.

A wonderful day of learning and catching up with familiar faces in the Yukon’s HR community! 💛

Yesterday, S-Curve’s very own Silvia Richards attended the CPHR BC & Yukon Legally Tech Symposium at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre in Whitehorse.

The symposium explored the evolving relationship between law, technology and artificial intelligence, including emerging risks, regulatory developments and how organizations can navigate the opportunities and challenges that come with new technology.

It was a full day of presentations, workshops, practical discussions and connecting with fellow professionals — including some quality time with other members of the Yukon Advisory Council!

There’s always something new to learn in HR, especially as technology continues to change the way organizations operate and support their people.

Thank you to CPHR BC & Yukon for another great event and the opportunity to connect with our local HR community!

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month, a time to recognize the contributions of people with disabilities and reflect on how we can continue building more accessible, inclusive workplaces.

Workplace accessibility is about more than responding to accommodation requests. It’s also about considering how our everyday practices, processes and expectations might create barriers that could be prevented or reduced.

From recruitment and onboarding to workplace communication, professional development and advancement opportunities, accessibility should be considered throughout the employee experience.

It’s also important to remember that not all disabilities are visible, and that employees’ needs can change over time. Creating an inclusive workplace means listening to people with disabilities, recognizing different experiences and remaining open to improving the way things are done.

For employers, that might mean reviewing hiring practices, making information available in accessible formats, ensuring employees know how to request accommodations, or examining whether everyone has equitable access to opportunities for growth.

An accessible workplace isn’t built through accommodations alone. It’s built through ongoing attention to the barriers that may exist in our everyday workplace practices.

This month, we recognize the skills, experiences and contributions of people with disabilities, and the importance of making meaningful inclusion part of our workplaces year-round.

Having workplace policies in place is important, but one of the bigger challenges for organizations is making sure those policies and expectations are applied fairly and consistently.

It’s surprisingly easy for different practices to develop across departments. One manager may approach performance concerns very differently from another, employees may receive inconsistent information about workplace expectations, or similar requests may be handled differently without a clear explanation.

Of course, every employee and situation is different, and fairness doesn’t necessarily mean treating everyone exactly the same.

What matters is that workplace decisions are based on clear criteria, take individual circumstances into account, and are communicated and documented appropriately.

When those foundations aren’t there, inconsistencies can lead to confusion, frustration and employee relations concerns that might otherwise have been avoided.

Good HR practices help organizations establish those foundations, while giving managers the guidance and flexibility they need to make thoughtful decisions.

Consistency isn’t about applying the same answer to every situation. It’s about having a fair, informed and reliable approach to making workplace decisions.

Your best employee might not want to be a manager. And that’s okay.

We often treat management as the natural next step for someone who’s great at their job, but career growth doesn’t have to move in only one direction.

Growth can also mean:

• developing deeper expertise
• taking on more complex work
• leading projects
• mentoring others
• having greater autonomy or responsibility

Being excellent at a role doesn’t automatically mean someone wants to manage people – or that management is where they’ll do their best work. Organizations can create stronger career paths by asking a simple question:

What does growth look like to you?

Because advancement doesn’t always have to mean managing people.

Today, we honour the Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, their families and communities.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a time to listen, learn, reflect and recognize the lasting impacts of the residential school system on First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.

Reconciliation requires more than recognition on one day. It asks us to continue learning, listening to Indigenous voices and carrying that understanding into the relationships, organizations and communities we are part of.

Today, we make space for remembrance, reflection and learning.

Every Child Matters.

Sometimes the recruitment challenge isn’t knowing you need to hire – it’s finding the time and capacity to do it well.

Recruitment support may make sense when:

→ Hiring keeps falling behind other priorities.
→ You’re struggling to reach qualified candidates.
→ You’re filling multiple positions at once.
→ The role is specialized, senior or confidential.
→ Your team simply doesn’t have the capacity to manage the process.

S-Curve Consulting provides full-cycle recruitment support across industries and organizational levels — including executive positions.

You bring the knowledge of your organization. We help carry the process.

Have a position to fill? Let’s talk.

This week is Gender Equality Week in Canada.

In the workplace, equality isn’t created through one policy or initiative. It’s reflected in the everyday systems and decisions that shape people’s opportunities and experiences.

Who is encouraged to apply? Who has access to development and advancement? Whose perspectives are considered when workplace practices are designed? Are our systems creating opportunity – or unintentionally creating barriers?

Building more inclusive workplaces means continuing to ask these questions across recruitment, leadership, workplace culture, policies and professional development.

Inclusive workplaces don’t happen by accident. They’re built intentionally.
