As a solo practitioner, how do you know if you're right for a project? Or if a project is right for you? Here's a wee story to consider:

For over five years, I have had the privilege of working with the team at Mt. Logan Lodge in Haines Junction, overlooking Kluane National Park just at the entrance into the spectacular Alsek Valley Trail. Conflict is inevitable, but how we deal with conflict is a choice.

As a mediator, one of the things I take pride in is helping clients to deal with that conflict constructively and with purpose. My role isn't to dictate the outcome, but to help create a path forward, where it's possible to shift focus from past to future and achieve a resolution.

Whether I'm working with a corporate Board of Directors or an organizational team, I lead with processes that support listening, hearing, and problem-solving, always with the goal of facilitating meaningful dialogue.

In governance, we speak regularly about role clarity and 'staying in your lane'. That is true albeit not terribly diplomatic.

This lane conversation is more about the many lanes that one can operate in. "Huh??? you say!" Let's call it the magic of cross-training.

For 21 years I was in the fitness industry. We did personal training, group fitness in aerobics, spinning and cross-fit. There were many lanes in fitness that I was able to expertly support clients in.

In business, I love that I can dig into governance, and also business, community and economic development. I am proud that I can lead public engagement strategically and mediate workplace conflicts. Get it? Lots of Lanes....

What lanes do you need skills in? Consider the value add-in a contractor with diverse professional skills for your team, problem or project. Consider working with PBMC.

Being self-employed is risk. There are no collective agreements, paid sick or holiday days…. And it’s a choice to jump into self-employment.

But what drives us? How do we know if we’re successful. What’s the success metric anyway?

My thoughts on success as an accomplished, self-employed businesswoman include:

✅ Alignment: When my work feels aligned with personal values, not just a paycheque.

✅ Purpose: The work matters to you, not just to the client.

✅ Choice: Peace of mind knowing that you can and should walk away from a bad-fit client.

✅ Value: Getting paid what the work is worth—that there’s value in my skills, experience, and contributions.

✅ Financial: My future—the bank and CRA demand it!

𝙀𝙭𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙢𝙮 𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙚𝙧𝙖!

Winter 2026 - Heading to Vancouver Island on a trial and I'm excited about all the possibilities and opportunities ahead, including the opportunity to take on fractional contracts in addition to remote work and projects. New learning, new relationships, new trails to explore.... and lots of ocean!

As conversations begin around fractional contracts, I've discovered the differences between fractional vs. traditional contracts vs. interim employment. For your curious pleasure:

1️⃣ 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁s
This involves working for more than one company at a time, and dedicating a fraction of time to each one. Fractional contracting offers flexibility to work with a variety of clients on an ongoing basis, and is a cost-effective way for companies to gain strategic leadership from a seasoned professional.

2️⃣ 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁s
This is probably what most of us grew up imagining our work lives would be like: working a full-time job for one company, with health benefits and paid time off included.

3️⃣ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
This is exactly what it sounds like: short-term employment contracts with a clear start and end. These contracts can often be project-based and also offer a lot of flexibility and opportunities to work with a variety of organizations.

When we know better, we are supposed to do better. Right?

For 37 years I have lived, worked, raised my family and explored the Yukon; home to 14 Yukon First Nations, 8 distinct traditional languages and 11 communities. I have embraced values that connect me to the land, air, people, water, and animals. I seek to listen and learn from teachings that inform my own values and perspectives.

I believe that in small ways, how I work, leading with an open heart, is my contribution to truth and reconciliation and to 'together today for our children tomorrow.'
