Our team travelled to Moose Lake, Manitoba in January as part of the Moose Lake Land Use Study - a community-led project documenting traditional land use, culturally important areas, and land-based knowledge to support future planning and stewardship.

During the visit, we stayed at Big Island Camp, where we worked with Elders, knowledge holders, and community members through interviews, mapping, and land-based discussions to learn more about local land use and community priorities.

At -28°C (feels like -43°C), we travelled by snowmobile, watched community members go ice fishing, hunt, and set traps. We also shared fish fry dinners over heartfelt conversations, played bingo together, and were fortunate to witness incredible star-filled skies and dancing auroras at night. ✨

We are grateful to the Moose Lake community for their warmth and hospitality, which made the visit so meaningful and memorable.💙

We had a busy week at the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) conference in Quebec City .

Jenn and Kristin joined environmental assessment professionals from across Canada and around the world to connect, share ideas, and discuss key topics shaping the field.

A highlight was Kristin speaking on the panel Communicating Truths: EA Practitioner Professional Ethics and Roles, where she shared insights on the role of practitioners, the importance of ethics in environmental assessment, and the value of clear communication in complex project environments.

Thank you to the IAIA organizers and everyone who made the week both insightful and memorable.

Our team takes book club very seriously. 🤓
So seriously that we keep up with our reading wherever work takes us.

Last year, InterGroup started a book club to create space for reading, reflection, and conversations around Indigenous perspectives and histories.

Our most recent read was Wînipêk: Visions of Canada from an Indigenous Centre by Niigaan Sinclair ✨

This was definitely one of those books that stayed with us long after the final chapter.

We spent time connecting with community members—listening, learning, and gathering local knowledge to help shape a stewardship plan that reflects community priorities and respect for the land🌎💬

Jennifer Olson is a Principal at InterGroup and has been with the firm for almost 15 years. She is involved in socio-economic impact assessments of resource development projects across the country, as well as developing and implementing community-based research programs. Jenn is a dog mom to Arti, our favourite co-worker, who diligently comes to the office most days.

Q: What do you do at InterGroup?
A: I work on impact assessments for large projects with a focus on understanding the effects to people, the communities they live in, and the resources they rely on. I also mentor and train staff.

Q: Something interesting that people might not know about your job?/Favourite part of your job?
A: I appreciate that InterGroup doesn’t take a cookie-cutter approach to clients and their problems. It gives us the opportunity to work with a variety of clients on diverse problems. It feels good to know you’ve helped a client without trying to shoehorn them into a solution that isn’t appropriate for their situation.

Q: Do you have a favourite project you have worked on? Or a fun memory from your time working at InterGroup?
A: I worked on a socio-economic and fiscal impact assessment for the Lake and Peninsula Borough in Alaska. We helped the Borough understand the potential impacts of a mining project and advised them on the mitigation, monitoring, and enhancement they should consider negotiating for with the mine developer. As a bonus, I visited Alaska twice. I loved going to the villages and meeting residents. I also had the opportunity to experience some fun parts of community life - watching a volleyball tournament in Port Alsworth and attending a community feast in Igiugig, which has a cool mascot (the No-see-ums).

Q: What keeps you busy outside of work?
A: Wandering city streets and the woods with my dog, binding books, and reading.

Q: Fun fact about you that not many people know?
A: I helped pay for university by busking.

Canada Geese are having a moment, and we are living for it. It was Migratory Bird Day this past weekend so we wanted to celebrate these beautiful, slightly scary, adaptable, migratory birds. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the TIFF nominated, National Film Board short film “Modern Goose” by Winnipegger Karsten Wall. Filmed in Winnipeg it gives the viewer a unique view into the urban lives of the often misunderstood Canada Goose.

Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art (MAWA) is a Winnipeg-based organization that supports women, non-binary, and Two-Spirit artists through mentorship and a wide range of events and activities.

We are proud to enter our sixth year of sponsorship of their annual Over The Top art auction and cupcake party, where over 150 artists donate their work to be auctioned off in support of MAWA’s initiatives. It was such a fun event filled with playful competition to ensure winning bids, and lots of yummy cupcakes! We’re already looking forward to next year!
