A successful backup and a successful ransomware recovery are not the same thing.

What makes this Cambodia-focused campaign notable is not just what it deploys, but how far it goes to stay hidden.

Acronis TRU traced an infection chain moving through DLL sideloading, shellcode concealed inside PNG files, process injection and the abuse of a vulnerable driver tracked as CVE-2026-36425, before loading SparkRAT into a trusted Windows process.

The campaign shows operational similarities to SilverFox-associated activity, but Acronis TRU tracks it as an unattributed cluster with possible Chinese-language development or deployment links.

Ransomware attacks rose 50% last year, according to the Acronis Cyberthreats Report H2 2025. Backups are failing not because they don't exist, but because attackers destroy them first.
