Michael Miebach - Steering Mastercard’s Digital and Regional Expansion

Johannesburg: MeritMEA - Anita Bosman

Born in Germany in 1968, Michael Miebach’s trajectory to the top of Mastercard is rooted in extensive international banking experience. A graduate of the University of Passau with a master’s degree in business administration and an alumnus of Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program, Miebach built his foundational career during a 16-year tenure across Citigroup and Barclays.

Between 1994 and 2010, he managed retail banking operations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (MEA). This period provided him with practical insights into how different markets approach financial transactions and regulatory environments.
His transition to Mastercard in 2010 as President of the MEA operations marked a significant shift toward financial technology. In a region where traditional banking infrastructure was still developing, Miebach bypassed conventional credit card rollouts. Instead, he collaborated with regional governments and telecommunications companies to build alternative mobile payment infrastructures. This strategic shift facilitated digital financial access for large unbanked populations, creating commercially viable and socially scalable models.

The success of these regional digital solutions heavily influenced Mastercard's broader global strategies. Recognizing the potential of this infrastructure-first approach, the company appointed Miebach as global Chief Product Officer in New York in 2016. By January 1, 2021, he officially assumed the role of global Chief Executive Officer.

Today, Miebach oversees a corporation valued at approximately €470 billion. Under his leadership, Mastercard is heavily investing in the future of payment architecture. The company is currently prioritizing predictive AI for fraud prevention, tokenized checkouts, and seamless digital wallet integration, often partnering with leading tech entities like OpenAI.

Beyond his executive duties at Mastercard, Miebach serves on the boards of IBM, the World Resources Institute, and the American Red Cross, reflecting a leadership focus that intersects technology, global commerce, and sustainable development.

Preserving the Golden Age - Inside Cairo’s Growing Vintage Car Culture:

The historic, sun-drenched avenues of Cairo have long been celebrated for their architectural grandeur, but a growing cultural movement is transforming the Egyptian capital into a living, breathing time machine.

Driven by passionate restoration enthusiasts and structured heritage events, vintage automotive culture in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region is experiencing a major renaissance, drawing international attention and shifting local preservation into high gear.

Rolling History on Kasr Street:
At the heart of this movement is a dedicated network of collectors who view classic automobiles not merely as property, but as dynamic pieces of cultural heritage.

A prime example of this momentum occurred during the recent Classic Car Festival organized by the Automobile and Touring Club of Egypt. The event saw dozens of meticulously maintained, rare classic vehicles mobilize at the club's historic headquarters on Kasr Street.

The resulting convoy created a stunning juxtaposition of eras, winding past the Cairo Opera House and cutting through several major avenues before returning to base. Onlookers and digital creators caught glimpses of automotive royalty, including meticulously preserved models from:

• Rolls-Royce & Bentley
• Cadillac & Buick
• Jaguar & Mercedes-Benz
• Chevrolet

In the Industry Insight, beyond localized club meetups, Egypt's classic car scene has scale. Flagship gatherings like the Cairo Classic Meet have previously transformed venues like Smart Village into massive exhibition hubs, drawing over 200 rare vehicles ranging from 1924 models to late-80s classics, and attracting thousands of visitors, families, and global enthusiasts.

The Restoration Challenge - A Labor of Preservation:
Maintaining a vintage vehicle within the MEA region requires significant resourcefulness. With legacy components often out of production, Egyptian collectors rely heavily on specialized local mechanics, custom fabrication, and international networks to source period-accurate parts.

From post-war American muscle like the 1963 Chevy Impala to sleek European roadsters like the Alfa Romeo Spider, each vehicle parading through Cairo represents thousands of hours of skilled labor and strict historical preservation.

A Growing Tourism and Media Footprint:
For regional media and tourism boards, Cairo's vintage car culture represents a potent blend of heritage tourism and digital engagement. Viral snippets showcasing classic cars moving gracefully against Cairo’s unique architectural backdrop regularly capture millions of impressions worldwide, underscoring a nostalgic charm that few other global cities can replicate.
As the Automobile and Touring Club of Egypt continues to celebrate its deep-running legacy, Cairo's streets will undoubtedly remain a premium stage where the golden age of motoring never truly fades.

The Architect of Resilience: Dr. Rania Al-Mashat and the New Paradigm of Economic Sovereignty

MeritMea: Johannesburg - Anita Bosman

In the high-stakes theater of global economics, few figures command as much respect for their ability to transform crisis into a catalyst for growth as H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat.

Born in the heart of Cairo and rising through the rigorous corridors of the International Monetary Fund and the Central Bank of Egypt, she has emerged as the definitive architect of the nation’s modern fiscal strategy. Her journey from a bright student at the American University in Cairo to being named one of the world’s top thirty female thought leaders is not just a personal triumph, but a reflection of Egypt’s own evolution into a sophisticated, forward-looking power on the global stage.

In an era defined by rapid geopolitical shifts and the frequent disruption of global trade corridors, the role of visionary leadership has transitioned from a professional asset to a national necessity. As Egypt's Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Dr. Al-Mashat stands as a testament to this transition, embodying a rare blend of technocratic precision and strategic foresight.

Her approach is not merely reactive but deeply structural, focusing on the "Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy" to ensure that growth is both sustainable and shielded from the volatility of external chokepoints. The current fiscal year marks a significant milestone in this journey, as Dr. Al-Mashat oversees the first phase of the Medium-Term Development Plan, a comprehensive framework designed to elevate the private sector's contribution to over 70% of total investments by the end of the decade.
This ambition is rooted in a philosophy of "economic diplomacy," where international cooperation is leveraged not as a source of aid, but as a strategic partnership for industrialization and green transition. By prioritizing the manufacturing and extractive sectors - with billions in targeted public investment - she is effectively retooling the Egyptian economy to become a resilient manufacturing hub for both Europe and Africa.

This shift is particularly evident in the recent pivot toward diversified energy sources, a move that has allowed the nation to maintain industrial momentum even as traditional maritime routes face unprecedented pressure.

Beyond the metrics of GDP and investment ratios, Dr. Al-Mashat’s leadership is defined by a commitment to human-centric development. Her narrative for comprehensive development integrates macroeconomic stability with the tangible improvement of public services and the creation of high-value employment.
This holistic view ensures that structural reforms translate into lived progress for the Egyptian people, fostering an environment where innovation can thrive despite regional headwinds.

As she steers the Ministry through these transformative years, her work serves as a blueprint for emerging markets, proving that with disciplined planning and a clear-eyed focus on sovereignty, a nation can transform global uncertainty into a catalyst for domestic strength and long-term prosperity.
