What did you do this week to help a colleague who could do nothing for your career?

Almost every line of Obama's speech is tweetable. It will require serious grace on my part to make it liveable. Wish me courage!

One of the most pragmatically helpful things a coach can do for a client is to provide and protect silence. In safe, unhurried, unthreatening silence deep thoughts have room cautiously to come to the surface. It is a challenge though for coaches to sell the value of silence in a commercial environment which so highly values tangible action and content. Luxurious ad campaigns may manage to sell silence as a respite from work, but the goal at Deane Babb is to provide silence as an integral part and as a facilitator of great, fulfilling work. Literature and art help us to sell the sound of silence and to bring people's attention to what peaceful silence can facilitate.

As this essayist examines her Irish roots, she finds that quiet has been long celebrated in the Irish literature, going back to the oral tradition.

A PROBLEM SHARED IS A PROBLEM HALVED.

The old maxim is not so much about sharing the burden of a problem as it is about gathering different perspectives to help you better understand the problem and its possible impact on you and other stakeholders. With new perspectives you can reframe the problem and seek out and experiment with a number of possible solutions.

Solving a problem all by yourself may feel like taking personal accountability and ownership, but that approach typically gets in the way of best results for you, your team and your broader stakeholders. Tame your ego and share.

There is a prevalent conversation now about how we should be facilitating our children's creativity. The language is all innovation and collaboration and thinking outside of the box. I am a huge fan of that conversation, but of the gap between my language and the message I actually give my kids? Not so much.
We adults keep asking children "what do you what to be when you grow up" and we teach them early that the expected answer to that question is to name some known job, trade or profession. So for all of our language, we smile encouragingly while we steer them neatly into a box.
Next time try asking: "what do you love to do?"; "what do you like to learn about?" or "is there anything you would love to try?" or "what problem in the world would you like to solve? That's interesting. If you knew how to solve that, how would you solve it?"
Listen. How do they respond?

If you are in a team, giving your best is not enough. To be a valuable member of a team, you must facilitate each of your colleagues to be at their best.
- What did you do last week to engage the best of your colleagues?
- What could you do this week to help each of your colleagues to do their best work?

How often do you glimpse your best self? What could you do to engage your best-self more often? What could you do to align your best-self with the work you do?

This is relevant now. Not only to war and major crisis, but to our daily way of being: to the way we organise society, to the way we organise work and education. People are not machines or capital or resources or collateral. We need to design, set up and maintain systems and conditions which facilitate people to thrive, free from systemic fear or exclusion. If only because it makes good business sense: Be kind.

In 1940, a movie was released starring Charlie Chaplin (who also wrote the piece) about a poor Jewish barber who is mistaken for a dictator of a similar appe...
