This week, we are celebrating Brendaline Shieke Nkenen, a dedicated sustainability professional and engineer whose work sits at the vital intersection of water, energy, and food security.
Brendaline is a Water Engineer and an African Union Scholar with a second specialization in Humanitarian Action and Sustainable Development from IRIC, Cameroon. Her expertise is focused on building resilient food systems through the food-energy-water nexus. This was clearly demonstrated during her Master’s research on water availability for rice production and her practical leadership as a Farm Manager, where she successfully expanded cultivation from 7 to an impressive 30 hectares of maize while introducing diverse crops.
Her impact spans across multiple sectors and high-level organizations. Currently, Brendaline serves as the Agriculture Team Leader in the African Union’s Enterprise Acceleration Network fellowship, advocating for climate-resilient farming and youth entrepreneurship. She is also a Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor with the African Youth Business Council, ensuring program excellence and stakeholder engagement. Her technical toolkit is as impressive as her leadership, utilizing Python, GIS, and data-driven log frames to optimize agricultural projects.
As the Founder of Agripath Solutions Ltd, Brendaline leads a "food for medicine" initiative, developing organic crop itineraries specifically for patients with non-communicable diseases. Her journey; from contributing to EU-funded renewable energy projects with SOPISDEW to reaching the top 5% of her class is a powerful testament to the impact of dedicated STEM leadership in Africa.
Her message to young girls aspiring to pursue careers in STEM:
“To every girl dreaming of a future in STEM: you are unstoppable. Through my work with WESAD International, I've seen that all girls can not only dream but achieve those dreams. Do this for yourself, because you are passionate about it—not just to prove someone wrong. The journey is challenging, and honestly, the higher you climb, the lonelier it can feel. But the rewards of discovery and impact are worth it. My own key to success was learning two vital skills: how to actively seek help when I needed it, and how to balance intense pursuit with necessary rest. This helped me reach the top 5% of my class. Remember your 'why,' build your support system, and be kind to yourself. Apply this, and you will absolutely make it.”
