🚨 EIGHT PEOPLE WENT TO SLEEP. BY MORNING, ALL EIGHT WERE DEAD. AND THE KILLER WAS NEVER CAUGHT.
📍 Villisca, Iowa, USA. June 1912.
It was supposed to be an ordinary night for the Moore family.
Josiah Moore, 43, and his wife, Sarah, 39, had gone to bed with their four children: Herman, 11; Katherine, 10; Boyd, 7; and little Paul, just 5 years old.
Two young sisters, Lena and Ina Stillinger, had also spent the night with the family after attending a church program.
By morning, all eight were dead.
Someone had entered the house during the night and attacked the sleeping victims with an axe belonging to the family.
But when investigators examined the crime scene, they discovered details that made the case even more disturbing.
⚠️ THE MIRRORS HAD BEEN COVERED.
Cloth and clothing had been placed over mirrors throughout the house.
The victims' faces had also been covered after the killings.
Investigators found a bowl of bloody water in the kitchen, raising questions about whether the killer had attempted to clean up.
Two cigarette butts discovered in the attic added another unsettling detail, although they never conclusively established who had been there or when.
And the killer had disappeared without leaving an identity investigators could prove.
💔 TWO OF THE VICTIMS WERE JUST LITTLE GIRLS VISITING FOR THE NIGHT.
Lena Stillinger was 12. Her younger sister, Ina, was only 8.
They had gone to a church program and spent the night with friends.
They never made it home.
The murders triggered a major investigation. Several suspects came under scrutiny, and one man, Reverend George Kelly, faced two trials but was never convicted.
Despite years of investigation and numerous theories, nobody was ever brought to justice for the eight killings.
More than a century later, the Villisca Axe Murders remain unsolved.
The house still stands in Iowa, attracting people fascinated by one of America's most notorious historical murder cases.
Eight victims.
One night of unimaginable violence.
And a killer whose identity remains unknown.
💬 Do you think the murderer was someone the family knew, or a stranger who had been watching the house?
