*Creating a culture of safety: Practice Over Principle.*

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is more than just rules, policies, regulations, checklists, and wearing PPE. It’s about protecting people the most valuable asset in any organization so they can return home safely every single day. At its core, OSH is human-centered. It is not about avoiding fines it’s about valuing life and dignity.

What OSH Really Means - OSH is the discipline that focuses on:

- Identifying workplace hazards (physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, psychosocial).
- Preventing injuries, illnesses, and accidents.
- Promoting mental and physical well-being at work
- Ensuring compliance while. going beyond standards.

Creating a True Culture of Safety:

A safety culture exists when safety becomes “the way we do things around the workplace.” It’s not driven by fear or punishment, but by shared values, trust, and accountability at every level from top management to frontline workers.

*Key pillars of a strong safety culture:*

- Leadership Commitment: Leaders must consistently practice what they preach. When management invests in safety, employees believe it matters.
- Employee Engagement: workers should be involved in decision-making since they are close to the job and are frequently exposed to workplace risks, they know the hazards best and can propose practical solutions that management might overlook.
- Open Communication: Encourage reporting of near-misses and hazards without fear of blame.
- Continuous Learning: Treat every incident as a learning opportunity, not just a paperwork exercise.
- Accountability with Support: Hold people responsible, but provide the training, tools, and resources they need to ensure a safe workplace.

Why It Matters

- It reduced injuries, accidents, near-misses and fatalities.
- It increases employee morale and retention.
- It increases productivity and fewer disruptions.
- It boosts your company’s image and lower insurance costs.

*Safety is not a cost; it is an investment.*

*Reflections on Webinar Series 005*

 *Session Highlights*

We just wrapped up an incredible session on "Workers’ Mental Health Promotion & Psychosociology: Concepts, Practices & Context." The depth of engagement today proved that mental health is no longer a "fringe' topic in Occupational Safety and Health—it is at the very heart of a productive and resilient workforce.
From dissecting global drivers to exploring the unique psychosocial challenges within the African labor market, the exchange of ideas was both practical and transformative.

 *Heartfelt Thank You*

This session wouldn't have been possible without our incredible community:
To our guest speaker, *Dr. Ehi Iden (OSH Professional & MentalHealthExpert; CEO@OSH Managers Nigeria;President@OSHAfrica* ).Thank you for your brilliant insights. Your expertise in mental health and your leadership within OSHAfrica continue to inspire us to look beyond physical safety to the well-being of the mind.
To our facilitator, *Mr. Leslie E. Njume (OSH Professional, MP@OSH-Lab Consulting, Cameroon; SG@OSHAfrica)*. Thank you for steering the ship and ensuring a dynamic, interactive dialogue.

To our Participants: From OSH professionals and occupational physicians to students and activists—your contributions during the open discussion brought the "context" of this topic to life. Thank you for showing up and speaking up!

 *Key Takeaways for the Road*

Capacity Building: Strengthening our understanding of psychosociology is a competitive advantage for any organization.
Situational Awareness: Global practices are great, but local context is what makes safety strategies stick.
Total Worker Health: Mental health is an integral part of the OSH framework, not an add-on.

What’s Next?
We are already looking forward to Webinar Series 006!

If you have specific topics you’d like us to cover or speakers you want to hear from, let us know in the comments.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and let’s keep building safer workplaces together.
