Why Is the U.S. Strengthening Oversight of Food Ingredients?
The food industry is undergoing an important change.
In August 2026, the U.S. FDA proposed new requirements related to GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) substances. Under the proposal, companies using a substance in food based on a GRAS conclusion would be required to notify the FDA and provide supporting information regarding its safety.
The proposal is still under review and has not yet become a final rule.
Previously, GRAS notifications were voluntary in many cases. The proposed change reflects a broader move toward greater transparency, safety documentation, and traceability in the food ingredient industry.
It also sends a clear message to food manufacturers and buyers:
Price is no longer the only consideration when sourcing food ingredients.
Are the product specifications clear?
Is batch-to-batch quality consistent?
Are technical documents such as COA and TDS available?
Can the raw materials and production process be traced?
Can the supplier provide stable, long-term supply?
These factors are becoming increasingly important in B2B food ingredient sourcing.
For food ingredient suppliers, real competitiveness is no longer just about providing a product. It is about delivering consistent quality, reliable documentation, traceability, and stable supply.
The food industry is gradually shifting from simply “buying ingredients” to managing the quality of the entire supply chain.
