A Chinese container ship has started its journey to Europe through the Arctic as part of a new weekly shipping service.
The service can cut travel time by almost half. The ship, named Dubai Tower, left Ningbo on August 15 and is expected to arrive in Felixstowe, England on September 7.
The ship is taking the Northern Sea Route. This route goes through the Bering Strait and along the north coast of Russia. It avoids the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. The route can only be used for part of the year because ships can travel without icebreakers only when enough sea ice has melted.
The number of container ships using this route is growing. In 2025, 23 ships used the route, compared to 15 ships in 2024. Environmental groups are concerned that more ships in the Arctic could make sea ice melt even faster.
