In 1892 this building was a cold storage facility for a dairy farm. Today it is one of Hong Kong's most photographed buildings and best cultural destinations. 📸

THE FRINGE CLUB — THE STORY:

🥛 1892: Built as cold storage for the Hong Kong Dairy Farm company. Victorian red brick construction. European heritage architectural style in the middle of a growing colonial city.

🎨 TODAY: Independent arts and cultural centre. Theatre performances. Visual art galleries. Live music. Rooftop bar. Eclectic mix of programming that reflects Hong Kong's hybrid East-West identity.

Every angle offers a different composition. Interior. Exterior. Courtyard. Rooftop. All photogenic.

One building. Four completely different lives spanning 170 years. And most tourists walk past it without knowing what they are looking at. 🏛️

VICTORIA PRISON — CENTRAL HONG KONG:

⛓️ 1841: Established as Hong Kong's very first prison — built in the same year Britain formally colonised Hong Kong Island. The colony's first act of governance included building this prison.

👮 CENTRAL POLICE STATION: The complex later became the Central Police Station — the operational heart of colonial law enforcement across the entire city.

⚖️ CENTRAL MAGISTRACY: Trials and judicial proceedings were held here — colonial justice administered in the same complex as colonial detention.

🎨 TODAY — TAI KWUN: The same stone buildings and iron gates now contain art galleries, heritage exhibitions, bars, restaurants, rooftop spaces, and performance venues. One of Asia's most extraordinary building transformations.

I've traveled to Hong Kong many times for business over the past 14 years, and it gets me every single time.

Here's why: Hong Kong has over 9,000 skyscrapers, more than New York City, packed into just 1,100 square kilometers with 7.5 million people living inside it. And somehow, a double-decker tram from 1904 still runs right through the center of the financial district.

This is Day 1 of my full Hong Kong travel series. Here's what we covered:

🔹 BORDER CROSSING FROM CHINA — A step-by-step walkthrough so you know exactly what to expect if you're traveling from mainland China.

🔹 MONG KOK FOOTBRIDGE — One of the most photographed spots in Hong Kong for a reason. It's not just a bridge — it's connected to markets, malls, and metro lines, which is why it's always packed.

🔹 KOWLOON MOSQUE — In the heart of Hong Kong, there's a beautiful mosque most Western travelers completely miss. We went.

🔹 STAR FERRY — The most famous way to cross Victoria Harbour. The crowd, the view, the experience — all covered.

🔹 DING DING TRAM — The world's only surviving double-decker tram service, operating since 1904. Still a primary mode of public transport. Absolutely iconic.

🔹 PEAK TRAM + VICTORIA PEAK — The "Million Dollar View" of Hong Kong at night. British-era history, a mountain tram, and a skyline that looks like it was designed by Hollywood. Real life cyberpunk.

🔹 HALAL FOOD — Two halal restaurants covered: a Tibetan halal spot for lunch (where I discovered Tibetan Muslims are actually Kashmiri by origin!) and Hong Kong Halal Beef Restaurant for dinner.

🔹 YAU MA TEI FRUIT MARKET — Night market, wholesale energy, the perfect way to end Day 1.

I also share honest visa info, transport costs, hotel reality (yes, rooms are small — it's Hong Kong), and why this city matters if you're interested in global trade and supply chains.

Tell me in the comments — have you been to Hong Kong? What surprised you most?

If you're planning to visit Hong Kong from mainland China, here are all 4 options, broken down honestly so you can make the right call for your trip.

🚄 HIGH-SPEED TRAIN — 50 Minutes | ~200 RMB (~$28 USD)
The fastest overland option. If time matters, this is your pick. Smooth, modern, direct.

✈️ BY AIR — 1.5 Hours | ~1,000 RMB (~$140 USD)
The most expensive by far. Unless you're using miles or have a specific reason, there's almost no reason to fly — every other option is cheaper and nearly as fast.

🚢 BY SEA (FERRY) — 1.5 Hours | ~200 RMB (~$28 USD)
Comfortable, scenic, and same price as the train. If you want the experience of crossing the water into Hong Kong, this is the one.

🚌 BY BUS — 3 Hours | ~100 RMB (~$14 USD)
The cheapest option — and surprisingly, the most convenient for many travelers. Luxury coaches with comfortable seats. Direct drop-off near key areas. If you're not in a rush, this is genuinely the best value.

VERDICT:
→ Budget + comfort: BUS (100 RMB)
→ Speed: HIGH-SPEED TRAIN (50 mins, 200 RMB)
→ Experience: FERRY (same price as train, more scenic)

Most people travel to Hong Kong for the skyline, the food, and the ferry.

Very few know that one of the most remarkable religious buildings in all of Asia is sitting right in the middle of Kowloon, on Nathan Road, surrounded by five-star hotels and luxury shopping malls.

The Kowloon Mosque and Islamic Centre.

Here's the story most travel videos skip:

🕌 BUILT IN 1896 — The mosque was originally constructed during British colonial rule, specifically to serve the Muslim soldiers of the British Indian Army who were stationed in Hong Kong. That's 128 years of continuous history.

🕌 300,000 MUSLIMS IN HONG KONG — Most people are shocked by this number. Hong Kong has a significant and thriving Muslim community, and the Kowloon Mosque is the largest mosque in the city and serves as its spiritual center.

🕌 CAPACITY: 3,500 WORSHIPPERS — On Fridays and religious occasions, the mosque fills completely. The building has been expanded over the years to accommodate the growing community.

🕌 NATHAN ROAD, KOWLOON — The location alone is extraordinary. You walk past malls and skyscrapers, and then you find this — calm, beautiful, and completely out of time in the best possible way.

🕌 STILL FULLY ACTIVE — Not a museum. Not a heritage site collecting dust. A living, functioning mosque where thousands of people pray every week.

Hong Kong contains multitudes. This is one of them.

Most travelers visit Petronas Twin Towers. Almost nobody talks about THIS. 👇

Seri Perdana is Malaysia's official Prime Minister residence, and it is completely closed to the public. Located in Putrajaya (Malaysia's specially designed administrative capital), this architectural masterpiece was built in 1999 and fuses traditional Malay design with Islamic architectural elements into something truly breathtaking.

What makes it so special?

✅ One of the most secure government residences in all of Southeast Asia
✅ Traditional Malay architecture meets Islamic design, a rare and stunning combination
✅ Features a grand green dome + elaborately landscaped royal gardens
✅ Part of Malaysia's unique dual-leadership system, a King AND an elected PM run the country

Save this post if you're planning to visit Malaysia , Putrajaya is a must-visit that most travel guides completely ignore. Drop a 🇲🇾 if you've been or want to go!

Most people see the Petronas Twin Towers as just another tourist photo backdrop.

I thought the same, until I actually stood there and learned what this building is really about.

Standing at 452 meters in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, these towers are hiding a story that most travel videos never tell you.

Here's what floored me:

🔸 THE SKYBRIDGE FLOATS
The famous bridge connecting both towers doesn't sit on a fixed support. It rests on giant ball bearings — designed to move freely when the towers flex and sway in the wind. A permanent fixed connection would crack under stress. The floating design? Engineering genius.

🔸 JAPAN VS SOUTH KOREA
The two towers were literally built by two different countries. Japan built Tower 1. South Korea built Tower 2. It became an unofficial international race — and South Korea, despite a LATER start, crossed the finish line first.

🔸 THE ISLAMIC STAR AT THE FOUNDATION
The entire base is designed around an 8-point Islamic star — representing unity, balance, and harmony, rooted in Islamic architectural tradition. It's not accidental. It's intentional and profound.

🔸 MORE THAN A LANDMARK
These towers are the global headquarters of Petronas — Malaysia's national petroleum company and one of the country's biggest economic pillars. They don't just represent Malaysia's skyline. They represent its ambition and its identity.

Drop a comment: would you travel to Kuala Lumpur just to see these towers in person? 👇
