What Is Tolerance — and Why Is It Unavoidable?
In manufacturing, tolerance is the acceptable range of variation in a part’s dimensions or performance.
Why can’t we make every part exactly to the nominal dimension?
Because manufacturing always involves variations — from material properties and mold conditions to temperature, machine accuracy, tooling wear, and measurement methods.
The goal is not zero tolerance. The goal is to define reasonable and controlled tolerances that ensure the part still works properly, fits correctly, and performs consistently.
Good engineering is not about eliminating variation completely. It’s about understanding, controlling, and managing it.
