The sources of batteries entering recycling systems are becoming increasingly diverse.

Some facilities handle manufacturing waste and electrode waste, while others process cylindrical, pouch, and consumer batteries; some projects also involve electric vehicle battery materials. Materials from different sources vary in size, structure, residual impurities, and material composition.

Meanwhile, different battery chemistry systems—such as NMC, LFP, NCA, LMO, and LCO—also affect the recycling pathways of subsequent materials, such as black blocks, copper, aluminum, steel casings, and separators.

Therefore, in the initial planning phase of a lithium-ion battery recycling project, simply asking "Can this be processed?" is insufficient; the following questions must also be assessed:

What raw materials are suitable for this production line?

Can this production line switch between different types of batteries?

Which materials require pretreatment?

Are the target products and downstream sales channels clearly defined?

Based on the latest industry trends, electric vehicle batteries, energy storage batteries, and battery manufacturing waste will continue to drive the growth in recycling demand. For recycling companies, understanding their specific battery streams in advance is more important than frequently modifying production lines later.

MAXIM will assist in assessing the most suitable lithium-ion battery recycling production line configuration based on the client's raw material sources, battery type, and target products.

In lithium-ion battery recycling projects, safety systems must never be regarded merely as ancillary components.
With growing global attention on battery recycling, the reuse of critical materials and the management of black powder, recycling companies must not only consider whether materials are recyclable, but also ensure that production processes are stable, safe and compliant with relevant regulations.
During the crushing, screening and sorting of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, residual charge, dust, flammable substances, fine particulates and exhaust gases may all pose operational risks to the entire production line.
If, during the initial planning stage, attention is focused solely on throughput and equipment costs whilst neglecting dust extraction, fire prevention, exhaust gas treatment and safety controls, the consequences that may arise in the future will not be limited to production downtime, but will also include pressure to comply with environmental regulations, fire hazards and rising operating costs.
Therefore, from the design stage onwards, safety should be regarded as a core element of any lithium-ion battery recycling project.
When developing lithium-ion battery recycling solutions, MAXIM assesses stages such as discharge, crushing, sorting, dust control and safety measures, whilst taking into account the client’s feedstock type, processing objectives and on-site conditions, thereby helping clients minimise long-term operational risks.
