Why do many bicycles feel perfectly normal at first,

but after a few kilometers,

suddenly start having:

▪ Rotor rubbing
▪ Brake noise
▪ Inconsistent braking feel

And sometimes:

the longer the downhill ride,

the worse it gets.

Many riders first try adjusting the caliper,

but in some cases,

the real issue is not the caliper at all.

Instead,

it comes from slight thermal deformation of the brake rotor under high temperatures.

During long downhill riding,

continuous braking causes the rotor temperature to rise rapidly.

The area experiencing the highest heat

is actually:

the braking track where the pads contact the rotor.

━━━━━━━━━━━━

If the rotor has:

▪ insufficient material stability
▪ inconsistent heat treatment
▪ poor flatness control

different areas of the rotor expand unevenly under heat,

which can lead to slight lateral warping.

━━━━━━━━━━━━

Even a deviation of:

0.15mm – 0.25mm

can already create noticeable:

▪ rubbing sensation
▪ high-frequency brake noise
▪ unstable braking feel

during riding.

Why are more MTB riders switching to:

180mm / 203mm larger rotors?

One major reason:

larger surface area helps improve heat dissipation and reduce brake fade.

Common rotor thicknesses today:

▪ 1.8mm
▪ 2.0mm
▪ 2.3mm

Most manufacturers generally recommend:

⚠ Inspecting or replacing the rotor when thickness approaches around 1.5mm.

✔ Avoid dragging brakes continuously on long descents
✔ Avoid cooling the rotor immediately with water after heavy braking
✔ Regularly inspect rotor flatness
