Owning a DOO in Serbia: The Good, The Bad & The Bureaucratic 🇷🇸💼
So you’ve got a DOO, or you’re thinking about it? Here’s what to expect — the perks, the quirks, and the paperwork that never ends.
✅ PROS:
💪 Limited liability = Peace of mind
If your business crashes, they can’t come for your grandma’s sofa. Your personal assets are (mostly) safe.
💸 Low starting capital
100 RSD to register? That’s less than a burek + yogurt combo. Seriously.
📜 Official AF
Having a DOO looks good. It’s the business equivalent of showing up in a blazer. Clients take you more seriously.
🏦 Access to business banking, grants, tenders
With a DOO, you can apply for state support, EU funds, and actually open a company bank account without suspicious stares.
🌍 Easy to work with foreign clients
Need invoices in English? VAT numbers? International transfers? DOO’s got you covered.
❌ CONS:
📑 Paperwork is eternal
There’s always one more form. Or stamp. Or signature. Bureaucracy is basically a full-time coworker.
🧾 Accounting is mandatory
You’ll need a certified accountant. Excel sheets and good vibes are not enough, unfortunately.
💰 Taxes & contributions hit hard
Flat tax? Cute. Now add health insurance, pension, and VAT. Surprise!
📆 Deadlines everywhere
Monthly reports, yearly reports, tax reports... miss one, and you get a love letter (fine) from the Tax Administration.
👮♂️ Inspections happen
Sometimes they knock. Sometimes they call. Sometimes they just show up with clipboards and judgment.
Is it worth it?
If you want to grow, invoice like a pro, and not look shady to clients — YES.
If you hate admin and love chaos — maybe just sell lemonade.
