Sopranos, coloratura edition, Sing This…Not That. There is no shortage of dazzling coloratura arias in the German repertoire. The problem is they're SOOOOOOOOO long and don't always work in an audition format. Committing to a 12 minute tour de force means you might not get to sing a second aria. Fiakermili's aria Die Wiener Herrn from Arabella by Strauss clocks in at just over 2 minutes, shows all the technical razzle dazzle and personality that Zerbinetta does, and is realistic role for a soprano entering the German system.

If you've been following along from the beginning, you've definitely heard the term Einspringer. But what does it mean, and how common is it in the German opera system? If you've spent anytime singing in Germany, you will either become an Einspringer at some point or you will work with someone who is jumping in to a show. In a system where covering is less common, the theaters depend on a vast network of local and regional singers with the skills, experience and availability to jump in and save the day at the last minute in the case of illness or injury.

Most operas have supporting or comprimario roles for mezzos or contraltos. But what should you be prepared to sing and/or cover if you want to expand your repertoire? Here is a list of operas that feature Stepping Stone Roles for middle and low voice ladies. In many instances, the artist singing the supporting role could also cover the leading role. This creates opportunity for the artist to expand their repertoire, while providing a much needed built in cover casting situation.

More Adventures of speaking German in the wild with friendly passerby. Full disclosure, I got myself totally turned around with my word order during that sentence in the middle of the conversation, but I think I managed, and they certainly knew what I was trying to communicate. I am always grateful when Germans excuse my mistakes and allow me to chat auf Deutsch. I promise, it does get easier, if you make the effort.
