Antiquarian books, bold ideas, and an unforgettable new chapter in Stuttgart – what a weekend the 2026 Antiquarian Book Fair has been!

For three days, the beautifully reimagined fair at the Liederhalle’s Schiller Saal brought together over 70 leading antiquarian booksellers from across Europe and beyond, setting a vibrant, international tone for the new concept. The mix of rare books, manuscripts, photography, prints, and book design created exactly the contemporary, outward-looking atmosphere we had hoped for – serious about heritage, but confident, modern, and unmistakably cosmopolitan.

Highlights? A refreshed focus on younger collectors and new audiences, a strong spotlight on women’s voices and craft in book culture, and a program that moved seamlessly between connoisseurship and design, conversation and discovery. From the “Young Collectors” initiatives to panels on a comtemporary outlook to new collectors, restoration and conservation and literature sciences the fair showed how tradition and innovation can genuinely reinforce each other instead of competing.

Jeschke Jádi, as an internationally oriented auction house rooted in both rare books and modern art, was proud to support this relaunch in close dialogue with the fair’s committee chair and the organising association. Strengthening this fair means strengthening one of Europe’s key hubs for serious, sustainable collecting – something that benefits the entire market, from first-time buyers to major institutional collections.

We are deeply grateful to all exhibitors, visitors, partners, and colleagues who believed in this new, more contemporary, more international – and yes, more female – vision for Stuttgart. Energised by 2026, Jeschke Jádi is already looking forward to the next edition in 2027 and to building on this momentum together!

Andy Warhol’s portrait of Mildred Scheel combines glamour with political and social commentary. The bright colors, clear contours, and jagged shapes translate the language of pop art into an iconic image of female sovereignty and presence.

The color silkscreen with diamond dust on vellum appears like a glittering media signal and deliberately plays with the aesthetics of celebrity culture. The diamond dust reinforces the auratic character of the image and places Mildred Scheel in the same visual sphere as Warhol’s Hollywood icons.

Icon between politics and pop
Warhol did not work from a standard press photo here, but from a photograph he took himself, emphasizing the closeness between artist and subject. Mildred Scheel, doctor, Second Lady of the Federal Republic of Germany, and president of German Cancer Aid, becomes the interface between political responsibility, philanthropy, and pop iconography.

The sheet was commissioned by German Cancer Aid, and the proceeds were used to generate donations. Thus, Warhol’s portrait becomes not only an image of a prominent personality, but also an instrument of socially engaged art in the late 20th century.

Max Coor captivates viewers with his impressive Northern Lights. Differently colored wooden rods arranged in two layers create a “flickering” image reminiscent of moiré effects, which, depending on the viewing angle, evokes a strong suggestion of movement. The bright colors and precise geometric order create visual vibrations that oscillate between surface and space and actively engage the viewer’s perception.

With this work, Coor draws on traditions of concrete art, op art, and kinetic art as shaped by artists such as Max Bill and Victor Vasarely. The composition follows rational, geometric principles and a systematic color scheme, but goes beyond pure optical illusion by creating a sensual, spatial experience between image and object.

Lot 46

Max Coor
Northern lights in motion. 2019.
86,5 x 86,5 cm.

Attention ⚠️ An incredible owl is watching you! 👀 Picasso’s “Chouette” from 1969 is a late ceramic work in which his decades-long exploration of the animal form of the owl, Mediterranean folk art, and the reduction of form to a concentrated, almost archetypal image are condensed. The work combines the sculptural plasticity of the turned vase body with painterly drawings scratched into the surface and exemplifies how Picasso, in his late phase, broke down the classical boundaries between sculpture, painting, and functional objects.

The owl was created in 1969 in the Madoura workshop in Vallauris, where Picasso had been working intensively on ceramic production with Suzanne and Georges Ramié since the late 1940s. It is a turned vase made of white faience, whose body is reinterpreted as a stylized owl: the bulbous shape functions as the torso, the neck as the head, and the handle and silhouette suggest wings. The surface is painted with engobes, engraved with tools while still leather-hard, and partially covered with a brush-applied glaze, creating a lively rhythm of matte and glossy areas.

Lot 319

Pablo Picasso
Chouette. 1969.
Ca. 30 cm

Ceramic. White earthenware, engobe, incised decoration and brushed glaze. Numbered and indicated on the base as well as with marks ‚Madoura Plein Feu‘ and ‚Edition Picasso.

Amelia stands still—yet speaks volumes about the pace of our present day. A small, high-gloss statuette that transforms the classic standing figure into a pictogram of the 21st century.

Julian Opie’s “Amelia” from 2019 translates the classic idea of the standing figure into a radically reduced, contemporary icon between pop culture and art history. The polished acrylic figure on a Corian base appears like a three-dimensional pictogram person, reflecting echoes of ancient statuettes as well as digital avatars and signage graphics.

Here, Opie further develops the tradition of classical statuary by reducing bodies and individuality to elementary lines and surfaces—similar to ancient votive figures, but filtered through the aesthetics of pop art, graphic design, and screen icons. The figure is thus in line with his “walking figures” and portraits, in which he transforms people into a kind of contemporary hieroglyph.

Julian Opie.

Polished acrylic on corian base (resin stone mix). Signed and numbered on the stand. In original box. - Very isolated slightly dusted, all in all very good. Splendid, clear-cut, monochrome work. -
