The German-born painter Joseph Heintz the Younger moved to Venice in the early 1620s, where he lived and worked for over fifty years until his death, becoming the leading exponent of 17th-century Venetian festival painting.
The “Festa del Redentore” is an annual tradition that has been observed in Venice since time immemorial to mark the Feast of the Ascension, during which, following the procession, the Doge throws his ring into the waves of the Adriatic Sea as a symbol of the “marriage of Venice to the Adriatic”, believed to bring good fortune. As documented in the picture, countless guests of honour from all over Europe took part in the ceremony every year.
